The Department of Psychology offers a BA in psychology that centers on developing and applying a scientific understanding of mind and behavior in five major areas of psychology: Behavior Analysis, Clinical Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, Developmental Psychology, and Social Psychology.  In addition, there is an emerging emphasis in the department on teaching biological psychology and neuroscience.

The Psychology Major requires completion of 35 credit hours.  We also offer teacher licensure in social studies (for secondary school teaching), a concentration in psychology (24 hours) for students in teacher education (elementary, middle-grades, business, marketing, health, physical education, and deaf education), and a minor in psychology (16-18 hours). All students (except second baccalaureate degree students) completing a degree in psychology must also complete the liberal education requirements of the College of Arts and Sciences.

A major component of the degree involves one-on-one attention from faculty members.  Students interested in attending graduate school in psychology have extensive opportunities to participate in directed research or in directed independent study.  Students can also join the Psi Chi honor society and participate in small upper-division courses that provide rigorous preparation for graduate study.

The psychology major is designed to offer students:

  • Opportunities for hands-on training in psychological research
  • An understanding of the use of scientific methodology in psychological research at both intermediate and advanced levels.
  • Knowledge in primary areas of the discipline through an array of intermediate courses.
  • Depth of understanding in areas of specific interest to individual students through opportunity for independent study.
  • Instruction in writing clearly and effectively in an appropriate professional style.
  • Knowledge useful in the application of psychological principles to human and social problems.
