Department Responsibilities

As the employer and host of an international employee the UNCG department is responsible for overseeing certain aspects of an employee's arrival to UNCG. These responsibilities range from pre-arrival communication to either the employee's departure or attainment of permanent residency. The following checklist highlights important actions that departments should take to ensure the smooth arrival and transition of international employees and their families into the US.

    Pre-Arrival:
  • Contact the Office of the Provost regarding appropriate visa status and processing
  • Designate a primary contact person in the department with whom the employee will communicate prior to and during his/her stay with the department
  • Communicate housing options and cost of living facts to the employee
  • Clarify expectations of the employee's position and support to be given with regards to office space, equipment, lab/office space, telephone, computer, clerical support etc.
  • Provide airport pick up and transportation to campus or to temporary housing
  • Schedule an appointment for all new international employees and their dependents to attend an orientation session at the Office of International Programs.
    Post-Arrival:
  • Make sure the employee has adequate housing
  • Give the employee a tour of the campus and department; inform them of any rules they should be aware of
  • Assist them in obtaining office space or other "set-up" procedures
  • Introduce the employee to colleagues in the department
  • Discuss the research project, teaching assignments, or other duties and make sure you both agree to and understand what is expected from the employee
  • Notify the Office of the Provost of any changes in employment or any problems which may arise.
