Coaching Minor
Major Requirements for all concentrations
All Exercise and
Sport Science majors must take the following 30 semester hours of Core
Courses:
1. ESS 280, 285,
330, 351, 375, 376, 385, and 388 must be completed with a grade of
"C" (2.0) or higher.
NOTE: No course
from the ESS Theory Core may be taken more than twice.
2. Six additional
activity courses as follows; no activity course may be repeated for
credit in the ESSS concentration:
- for
ESSS Aquatic Leadership concentration, include 258, 259
- for
ESSS Fitness Leadership concentration, minimum 6 hours
- for
ESSS Sports Medicine concentration, minimum 6 hours which must include
ESS 120, 130, 202, and 258
- for
Teacher Education concentration, 6 hours to include 207, 208, 213,
214, 315, and 316.
3. All majors
in all concentrations are required to complete training in first aid
and adult and child CPR and must be current for ESS 391, 441, 461-462,
477, 594, 595. Report to ESS Department with documentation.
Minimum requirements
are:
(a) for Teacher
Education K-12 and ESS Fitness Leadership, ARC Sport Safety Training
with Adult and Child CPR.
(b) for Aquatics
and Sports Medicine, ARC First Aid and CPR for the Professional
Rescuer
(c) Specific
courses may have additional requirements
4. A minimum GPA
of 2.3 at UNCG is required for an undergraduate to enroll in 500-level
courses in the Department of Exercise and Sport Science.
5. To qualify
for graduation, all majors in all concentrations must achieve a grade
of "C" (2.0) in each required course with an ESS prefix.
ESSS Aquatics
Leadership Concentration
Aquatic Instructional
Leadership Option:
1. Additional
ESS courses: 202, 220, 390, 410, 458, 459, 594
2. Related
areas: LIS 111; MGT 200; *BIO 111, BIO 271 and 277 or approved transfer
courses; *CHE 103, 104, and *CHE 110L or CHE 111, 112, 114, and 115;
*CST 105 or 341; NFS elective; HEA elective; *PSY 121; *STA 108.
3. A minimum overall
GPA of 2.5 is required for enrollment in ESS 594 (internship)
* Students should
take these courses as part of the fulfillment of AULER.
Aquatics for Therapy/Rehabilitation
Option:
1. Additional
ESS courses: 220, 381, 410, 459, 568, 594
2. Related areas:
*BIO 111, BIO 271 and 277 or approved transfer courses; *CHE 103,
104, and *CHE 110L, or CHE 111, 112, 114, and 115; *CST 105 or *341;
NFS elective; HEA elective; *PSY 121; RPT 231 or 314; *STA 108.
3. A minimum overall
GPA of 2.5 is required for enrollment in ESS 594 (internship)

ESSS Fitness
Leadership Concentration:
1. Additional
ESS courses: 220, 410, 568, 569, 570, 595 (a minimum GPA over 2.3
is required for enrollment in any ESS 500-level course)
2. Related areas:
*BIO 111, BIO 271, and 277 or approved transfer courses; *CHE 103
and 104 and CHE 110 lab, or *CHE 111 and 112 lab and *CHE 114 and
115 lab; *CST 105 or *341; *STA 108; HEA elective; NFS elective
3. A minimum GPA
over 2.3 is required for enrollment in any ESS 500-level course.

ESSS Sports Medicine
Concentration:
1. Additional
ESS courses: 220, 390, 391, 441
2. Related areas:
*BIO 111, BIO 271 and 277; CHE 111* and 112*; CST 105* or 341*; HEA
201* and 314; NFS 213; NUR 405; PHY 211* or 291* and 251* and PHY
212 or 292 and 252; PSY 121*; STA 108*;
3. Electives (17-23
hours): At least 9 hours of electives must be chosen from the following:
CHE 114 and 115, 205 and 206, 351, 352 and 354, 556, 557 and 558;
CSC 101; ESS 459, 543, 568, 569, 570, 575, 576, 595; MAT 191; NFS
313, 531, 550, 560; PSY 250, 341
4. Formal admission
to Sports Medicine concentration:
(a) Successful
completion of BIO 111, 271, and 277; CHE 111 and 112; PHY 211 or
291, plus PHY 251 lab; ESS 220
(b) Completion
or current enrollment in ESS 390 and 391
(c) Cumulative
GPA of at least 3.0 for admittance to program
(d) Completion
of application in ESS Department office prior to enrollment in ESS
390. Students should obtain detailed information early in their
program of study to identify themselves as potential ESSS Sports
Medicine concentration students.
5. Students must
be formally admitted to the concentration prior to enrolling in ESS
441.

take these courses as part of the fulfillment of AULER.
Additional Requirements
for entry into the ESSS or Aquatics Leadership internship courses, ESS
594 or 595
Students
should begin early by getting written, detailed instructions from ESS
Department, 237 HHP.
At the time of application
for placement in ESS 594 or 595, students must present evidence of the
following:
1. Health and
immunization clearances:
a. a tuberculin
Mantoux skin test (or chest x-ray if skin test is positive)
b. a tetanus
toxoid immunization
c. Rubella and
Measles evidence as required by the University
d. history of
Mumps or Mumps immunization
e. Chicken Pox
titre or Chicken Pox vaccination
f. completion
of Hepatitis B immunization series (begin the inoculation series
at least one year before the semester of internship placement)
If immunization
requirements change on short notice, students will be notified.
2. Students must
purchase professional liability insurance to begin the courses 594
or 595. Students should obtain a written, detailed explanation of
this requirement in the ESS Departmental Office.
Teacher Education
Concentration:
1. Additional
ESS courses: 217, 299, 354, 381, 454, 461-462, 464
2. ARC Certification
in Community First Aid and CPR is required
3. Teacher Licensure
Requirements: HEA 201, ELC 381, CUI 450, 470, and satisfactory teaching
and technology portfolios.
4. Students who
have not been admitted to the Teacher Education Program may not
enroll in ESS 354, 454, 461, 462, 464.
