The Athletic
Department promotes the University's philosophy of a student-athlete
through its affiliation with the NCAA Division I and the Southern Conference.
In the
Division I era (since 1991), athletic teams have achieved national rankings,
earned NCAA Tournament berths and captured numerous conference championships.
Men's and women's soccer and basketball teams, softball and baseball
teams and individuals competing in wrestling and women's golf have reached
the NCAA Tournament. In the Division II era (1967-88) the men's soccer
team won five national championships and the women's basketball team
had second- and third-place finishes. Women's tennis was national runner-up.
A men's golfer was individual national champion. In 1973 the women's
golf team won a pre-NCAA national title.
