A soft-spoken Greensboro native, you have skillfully combined your keen knowledge of the business world with your fervent interest in and strong dedication to public service. Serving as a key figure in both administrations of President Bill Clinton, you distinguished yourself as an extraordinarily competent and effective leader during a turbulent period in our nation's domestic history. Prior to your arrival in Washington you developed a reputation as one of North Carolina's most successful business executives, and one who gives generously of his time and resources for the betterment of his community. Nationally recognized for these uncommon characteristics, you have enjoyed a remarkable career marked by the highest level of achievement in both the public and private sectors. Your recent leadership of the North Carolina Rural Prosperity Task Force provides a roadmap for the public and private sectors to revitalize rural North Carolina for the future.

In recognition of your outstanding public service, and in consideration of the economic opportunities you have helped to create through your exceptional accomplishments as a private businessman and public official, The University of North Carolina at Greensboro is pleased to confer upon its native son the degree, Doctor of Laws.
