Will classes that I take at other colleges count in my GPA at UNCG?

Most of the time, only courses completed at UNCG count toward the UNCG GPA. Exceptions to that policy include local colleges and universities that participate in the Greater Greensboro Consortium. Students may complete courses at local participating schools provided they are enrolled at UNCG during the same semester. Students pay only UNCG fees and should be enrolled for more courses at UNCG than at the host institution. For more information, contact the University Registrar's Office at 336/334-5946 or transfer@uncg.edu.

How many credit hours can I transfer to UNCG?

Students may transfer a maximum of 64 semester hours from a community college. There is no limit to the number of semester hours a student may transfer from an accredited 4-year institution; however, students may only attempt 168 hours at UNCG while pursuing a first undergraduate degree. See the UNCG Undergraduate Bulletin for details about credit regulations, credit limits, and degree requirements.

I have completed 64 hours at a community college. Why did I not receive a waiver of my GEC requirements?

Completion of 64 hours at a community college does not necessarily mean that all requirements of the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement have been met. For more information on CAA requirements, please visit http://intranet.northcarolina.edu/docs/assessment/

I have received an Associate in Arts/Associate in Science degree. Why did I not receive a waiver of my GEC requirements?

Completion of an Associate in Arts or Associate in Science degree does not necessarily mean that the qualifications for a waiver of GEC requirements has been met. For information regarding degrees earned at North Carolina community colleges, visit http://intranet.northcarolina.edu/docs/assessment/ caa/March%202006/CAA_Brochure_Final_03.2006-1.pdf. For degrees earned outside of North Carolina, please contact the Transfer Articulation Department at transfer@uncg.edu for further evaluation.

Will the course I'm taking at [name of institution] transfer to UNCG?

The Transfer Information section of the University Registrar's Office Web site has a complete listing of all North Carolina community college courses that transfer to UNCG. This list is current for the 2006–07 academic year. There are also partial listings for selected institutions in the searchable database on the same page. If you have specific questions regarding transfer equivalencies, contact transfer@uncg.edu.

I don't see the course I took listed in the equivalency table. Does this mean I don't receive credit?

Not necessarily. While some courses may not transfer because they are considered technical or vocational, other transfer courses may not have equivalencies yet. Your courses will be evaluated when you apply and you will be sent a transfer equivalency worksheet with a statement of what courses will transfer to UNCG.

My transfer equivalency sheet shows a transfer class with a “000” on it. Does that mean I’m not getting credit?

No. The “000” designation means that the course transferred as an elective because there is not an exact UNCG equivalent for the course. Elective courses may fulfill one or more general education requirements.

I’ve received my TEW, but it doesn’t say anything about how my transfer credit meets UNCG general education requirements or fits into my chosen major.

Several weeks after you receive your acceptance letter, you will receive a degree audit from Student Academic Services. The degree audit will list general education and major requirements that have been fulfilled by your transfer work. You may also see your general education requirements online at UNCGenie (from Student Services & Financial Aid Menu, select Student Records, then Degree Evaluation after you log in). If you are a Business or Nursing major, you will be able to see your major requirements online.

Can I get credit for writing intensive and speaking intensive courses I took at another institution?

Because UNCG's writing and speaking intensive requirements are specific to the University, you will receive credit only if the transfer courses were part of a similar writing or speaking intensive requirement at the transfer school. You will be asked to furnish documentation of these programs and will receive credit only if the specific section of the course you took was designated writing or speaking intensive at the transfer school. Please note that writing and speaking intensive petitions are rarely granted in order to preserve the integrity of this University's requirements.

A course for which I received transfer credit at UNCG is designated writing or speaking intensive here. Why did I not get this credit when I transferred the course from another school?

While the course you took at a transfer school may be equivalent to a UNCG course, we cannot add writing or speaking intensive credit unless this course was part of a similar program at the transfer school.

I took courses at a school outside of the United States and had my transcript sent to UNCG. Why haven’t I received a transfer equivalency worksheet?

Academic policy requires that all international courses (even those taught in English) be evaluated by a professional, accredited third party. Transfer credit for international work is not posted until evaluations and course descriptions have been submitted to the University Registrar’s Office. We recommend World Education Services. Please visit the WES Web site at www.wes.org.

Who do I contact if I notice an error on my transfer equivalency worksheet or if I am having difficulty interpreting the TEW?

The Transfer Articulation Division of the University Registrar’s Office is available to answer questions about transfer credit from 8 A.M. to 5 P.M., Monday through Friday, at 336/334-5946, or at transfer@uncg.edu.

Can I receive credit for occupational or life experience?

Up to 12 hours of elective credit will be awarded for junior- or senior-level Army or Air Force ROTC courses. UNCG does not award credit for other occupational or life experience.

What courses will transfer to UNCG?

Nearly every course completed at an accredited 4-year institution will transfer to UNCG. Exceptions include developmental courses (e.g., Intermediate Algebra) or lower-level ROTC courses. Courses completed at a community college must be a part of the institution's college transfer program. Most of these courses apply toward the Associate in Arts or the Associate in Science degree but not the Associate in Applied Science (the AA or AS but not the AAS). Students may review our course equivalency search for specifics.

I took courses at another school, but I don’t think they will transfer to UNCG. Do I still need to send a transcript?

Yes. For purposes of academic accuracy, a transcript should be sent from each institution you have attended.

Can I get an unofficial evaluation of my transfer credit before I apply?

You may schedule a transfer advising appointment with a transfer admissions counselor by calling the Office of Admissions at 336/334-5243.

How do I know if UNCG has received my transcripts?

You may check transcript arrivals by logging in to UNCGenie from the main page (http://www.uncg.edu) with your nine-digit student ID number and six-digit PIN. From the main menu, go to Student Services and Financial Aid, then Admissions. You will be able to see the status of your supporting application materials here.

What do you mean by “an official transcript”?

An official transcript is one that arrives in a sealed envelope from the transfer institution on official transcript paper. If the envelope seal has been broken, this invalidates the transcript. Official transcripts may be mailed or delivered by the student. We do not accept faxed copies of transcripts or transcripts that arrive in opened envelopes.

How long does it take to process a transcript from another college once UNCG receives it?

For continuing UNCG students, the Transfer Articulation division of the University Registrar's Office makes every effort to complete processing within 48 hours of receiving an official transcript from another institution.

Prospective students' official transcripts that are received by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions usually require about a week for processing to be completed. The Office of Undergraduate Admissions coordinates this processing with the Transfer Articulation division of the URO.

I requested my transcripts from my former school several weeks ago and my credit still isn't showing up. What can I do?

First, verify that your former school sent the transcript. If you have verified that the transcript has arrived at UNCG, please be aware that we handle many transcripts each week and may be processing yours. To check on transcript status, you may call 336/334-3725 or e-mail transfer@uncg.edu for a faster response.

How will I know if my transfer credit has been processed?

As your transcripts are received, a transfer equivalency worksheet (TEW) will be processed for each institution. You will receive the transfer equivalency worksheet(s) with your acceptance letter.

If you have not submitted all transcripts at the time of your acceptance, worksheets will be prepared and sent as additional transcripts arrive. If you have been accepted, you can check your academic transcript on-line to see a current statement of your transfer credit. This service is available through your UNCGenie account.

I was able to see my credit when I last logged in, but it has since disappeared from my record. Where is it?

When we are processing updates to your record, such as final grades, we must temporarily take your credit offline. The credit is still in the system. Please wait several days and check again before contacting us.

I had my transcript sent and you told me the credit was posted, but it still isn't showing up on my degree evaluation.

If you are using the online degree evaluation system, you will need to generate a new evaluation in order to see the credit.

I am a continuing student who took classes at another school as a visiting student. How do I get the credit to transfer to UNCG?

Follow the school’s procedure and have an official transcript sent to UNCG. After your transcript is received, transfer credit will be posted to your UNCGenie account. Transfer equivalency worksheets are usually not prepared for continuing students.

I repeated a course at another school for additional credit hours. Will I get transfer credit for both attempts?

In cases where a music, dance, physical education, or independent study course is repeated for credit, subsequent attempts will be counted in the transfer hour total. If a course is repeated in an attempt to bring up a low grade, the first attempt will not be counted in the transfer hour total provided that the grade is lower than the one earned in the second attempt.

Some of my courses were granted transfer credit at another school but not UNCG. Why not?

Transfer credit policies vary from school to school. UNCG does not rely on another school’s determination of credit to make transfer evaluations.

I was placed into a certain course (ex. foreign language, math) based on proficiency tests or AP/CLEP exams at another school. Why didn't I receive placement at UNCG?

We are unable to grant credit based on placement exams taken at other schools; we must receive the AP or CLEP scores directly from the College Board. In cases where credit has been granted on the basis of a placement test, you will need to complete a similar placement test at UNCG.
