Mary
Foust Residence Hall is a University Resident Hall and therefore
has a
full Residence Life staff, but because
is also an academic program, we have the
Residential
College Coordinator,
and
three Community Assistants (Melissa, Aaron, and Katelyn).
To
assist the RCC, UNCG also hires one Community Assistant
for each
floor. Our CA’s are responsible for
enforcing
university
regulations so that each person can be safe and happy
living
in good ol’ Mary Foust. These staff
members are very
helpful
and are always willing to be of service.
Although each one is happy
to help,
they are all students, too; so try not to abuse them.
They are
great people—but don’t make them enforce the rules
by doing
stupid, illegal stuff in the dorm like drugs and alcohol!

CA’s
have a floating master key and will not have that
key when
off duty. And remember that
they too
have a million non-work related things
to do
during the day (and are not on duty then),
so plan
your activities accordingly.

What do
they do? They mediate disputes, check-out equipment,
guarantee
a safe and friendly environment in the dorm, talk,
visit,
hang out, check-up on you, and make sure that rules
are
being enforced and followed.
[rc upperclasspersons]
Although
not paid staff, the
to have
seven, student-selected upperclasspersons returning this year.
As you
know, RC is a primarily freshmen/sophomore program.
However,
each year a student-selected committee chooses a maximum
of ten
rising juniors and seniors to come back the following year to assist the new
and returning students in running RC.
Upperclassperson are
fabulous
resources who want to help.

Another
marvelous RC resource is the Orientation Leaders
(by the
time you read this handbook, you should have already me many OL’s—
they’re
the ones that moved in all your stuff).
Selected
in the spring semester, OL’s are students who support and
guide
the incoming first year students through the occasionally trying,
but
memorable first days and weeks of university life.
OL’s
devote their time to making the arrival of the new students a
successful
and stress-free event.

[rights, responsibitlies, and rules]
[your rights]
Your
rights depend on how you look at things.
founded
on the idea that you are a responsible adult
and
should be treated that way. But RC is
housed
in a
campus residence hall which is governed by the
(much
more strict and severe) rules set up by the
Office
of Housing and Residence Life and the University.
Finally,
know that UNCG is a state institution, subject to the same
restrictions
and regulations as say, a park bench.
Affecting
a balance between these influences is what it’s all about.
Seriously.
[your responsibilities]
Your
responsibilities include making the most of the opportunities
afforded
by the RC program, being kind and accommodating of everyone
else who
lives in the building, following the rules
and
having a really good time along the way.
[rules]
Some
rules are listed below on the next page, but this is only a partial
list. Full details are available in the
University’s
Policies for Students handbook, in the Living
on Campus handbook
from
Residence Life, or from your CA/
Memory loss as to what the rules are does not
excuse you if you break them.
The RC
staff members are here
to help,
and to make sure that Mary Foust is a healthy and
comfortable
place to live. Of course, all of us
living in RC
have an
obligation to make RC the best experience it can be!
(The
Campus Police, University Administration, and Residence Life staff are the
Authority
figures. Do what they tell you and
you’ll do just fine).
[drugs and alcohol policy]
Absolutely
no drugs or alcohol in RC.
So I guess that means we don’t really have
one, cause you can’t have any.
No drugs or alcohol in the dorm. At all.
You’ll
simply be instructed to move out of Mary Foust.
We’ve
seen it happen, it isn’t pretty, trust us.
Shall we
quote? This excerpt can be found on page
53 of your Policies for Students
handbook:
For a first offense involved in the illegal
possession of any controlled substance
(alcohol or drugs) the minimum penalty shall
be suspension from
enrollment…for a period of at least one
semester or its equivalent.
Residential students convicted of such
offenses shall be removed from
University housing in addition to the above.
So;
there you have it.
The University doesn’t care how much we love
you.
If you
break this rule -- you’re out, first offense.
Please
note: there is a troublesome exception to the alcohol policy.
Those
over 21 years of age may drink responsibly in the dorm.
However,
individuals under 21 (such as roommates, or even
those
who happen to be hanging around with those old folks)
cannot be found with alcohol “in, on, or
about” themselves.
Yeah, 21 year-olds can drink in the dorm, but
they have to drink alone
and store it in their own fridge.
Fun,
huh?
[visitation policy]
Mary
Foust Hall is one of the few halls on campus where freshmen live
That has
a 24/7 visitation policy. However, it
also is the only dorm
on
campus that is unlocked for a significant portion of the day
(to
accommodate classes).
So while
you can have guests at any time, visitation is subject
to the following escorting policies:
1) You must escort your guests at all times
EVERYWHERE.
This
means you can’t let them go alone even to the bathrooms,
water fountains, the room next door, out into
the courtyard,
basically
wherever).
2)
Guests may only stay
overnight four nights per month
(exceptions
can be arranged with the approval
of your
roommate and your CA—
and must
be indicated on a Roommate Contract).
3)
You are responsible
for you guest at all times
(if they get in
without you and are found roaming, this is your problem,
and your
responsibility).
Remember there’s a $25 fine and 4hrs community service for
any offense!
[smoking policy]
No
smoking is allowed anywhere near the building or in the courtyard.
Hallways,
public areas and student rooms are equipped with smoke
detectors (tampering
with them will get you in trouble, just so you know).
And make
it a point to not smoke under the
overhangs, even when it’s raining. We know it’s hard to stay dry
when it’s raining and you want a smoke, but the smoke
pools
in the
doorway making it unpleasant for everyone else.
The
smoking area is outside on the south side of the building
(near the beach, and
Petty Science—your key will work that door).
Ash cans are provided,
make it
a point to use them and not the ground.
Butts
all over the ground, well, it’s gross.
[furniture removal]
If it
was here when you moved in, it had better be there when you move out.
Period.
[rc on animals]
Fish are
the only pets allowed in the dorm.
Unless
it is a fish (other aquatics, semi-aquatics,
or
straight air-breathers are prohibited) you’re hankerin’ for, well, you’ll
find
yourself fresh out of luck.
We here
in RC realize the joy found in a land lovin’ new pet,
but it
really never works out.
Trust us
on this one.
[prohibited articles]
As those
of you who are returning remember, Residence Life regulations
prohibit
certain items in the residence halls (mostly fire hazards).
Prohibited
articles will be confiscated, so please send all of the
following
items home immediately:
1) Extension
cords that are not heavy duty cords and power strips
(they
should be equipped with switches/circuit breakers)
2)
Halogen lamps
3)
Coffee makers are prohibited if there is metal exposed. However, if the
hotplate
is entirely encased and if it has an automatic
shutoff,
it’ll be just fine.
4)
Hotplates of any kind (cook in the kitchen people)
5)
Candles, incense, potpourri burners (if it burns it doesn’t belong).
If you’re looking to make your room smell
nice, how about those
scented
oil rings that are heated by light bulbs?
The
building is also governed by state regulations regarding weapons, drugs,
alcohol,
and other regulated substances.
If you
have specific questions ask your CA or
ResLife
Staff (painters, housekeepers, maintenance, contractors, etc.) may
Pursue
rules violations at any time. There are
safety checks throughout the semester.
Staff go through you room, confiscate and write up accordingly.
[cable]
Your
rooms are equipped with cable-TV plugs.
UNCG
Cable
service is provided by Time-Warner Cable and offers about 60
Channels
(HBO is the only premium channel).
Your CRL
has connector cables for sale at just $3 for 6 feet.
Please
note: You can contact Time-Warner if
you’d like to pay
for any
additional channels, but the package you have is covered by your
room and
board fees.
[computer access]
Every
room is wired for direct Ethernet access to the campus network.
It’s
beautiful.
There
are two jacks in each room (one for each roommate).
Each
wall plate has one phone and one network connection.
These
jacks are very similar, but the larger of the two is for the network,
the
smaller is the phone. Make sure you plug
the right one in so that
you can
call Mom and Dad right away.
Please
Note: You need a network card to make this work (most computers
have
built-in cards). Residence Life may be
providing these
Network
cards at a reduced rate if you do not have them.
Call
44686 or ResNet 41626 for any computer problem you need resolved.
And, heh, people, if you
are playing poker online, get over the habit. You can't afford it and you
don't have the time.
You are here to have REAL experiences--to study and learn
and make friends--not to
have VIRTUAL experience that will drain you (and your parents) dry
of money and life.
And if you have web
site--face book; my space; whatever--be careful. ANYTHING you do
on the computer and on
the Internet is public. You put your picture up there
it can be seen by any and
everyone. And UNCG IT has record of every place any computer inside
their system goes.
Everything you do is a bit private, but know that it could
someday be public, too.
Be careful!!! Be smart.
