The Residential College
was created to provide a setting which encourages innovative study, small
classes, unity of academic and social experiences and close student-faculty
contacts. It is primarily a two-year program for first and second-year
students with a limited number of upperclass person participants.
Members of the program live and have classes in a coed dormitory.
A full-time faculty member resides within the dorm, and faculty members
have offices in the residence hall.
Faculty members from many different departments and schools teach in the Residential College, and courses fulfill All-University Liberal Education Requirements for all majors. From these class offerings students choose six to nine hours of interdisciplinary core courses, informal seminars, community service work, and varied types of independent study. The students’ other classes are taken in the University outside the Residential College. A computer lab located within Mary Foust Hall provides 24-hour access to computing for classes.
Residential College students are full members of the University and participate in the life of the University as a whole. In addition, the College offers a wide variety of social and extracurricular opportunities sponsored by the committees in which all RC students participate. Activities typically include student-faculty retreats in the mountains, Parlor Theater productions, parties, coffeehouse sessions, and dinners for students and faculty; these events are partially funded by student program dues.
All students admitted to the University are eligible to apply to the Residential College, and the program is open to students from all majors and schools. Primary qualifications for admissions are genuine interest in the Colleges program and the potential to profit from it.
