| PROGRAM
OVERVIEW
In summer 2002, the Department of Romance Languages at UNCG inaugurated
its summer French program in the beautiful historic city of Angers, located
in the Loire valley region of west-central France. The program affords
students an opportunity to study French culture and language in classes
that meet for 3 hours each morning, 5 days/week, during the 4 weeks of
the program. Students also participate in organized excursions to
sites of historical and cultural interest in the area 2-3 times per week.
Other afternoons and weekends are free to allow students time to study
and to explore the many additional wonders of the Anjou region, France,
and other countries in Europe.

ABOUT
ANGERS AND THE REGION
Angers is a medium sized city of about 156,000 inhabitants (260,000 in
the affiliated 29 communes) located about one and a half hours by TGV,
or three hours by car or bus, west-southwest of Paris in the heart of the
Loire country. Situated on the Maine River (a tributary of the Loire),
Angers has much to offer the senses and intellect of every visitor.
In the city itself, you will discover the lively outdoor Lafayette market,
the monumental
medieval castle begun by Blanche of Castille and Saint Louis in the 13th
century, the famous 14th century Tapestry of the Apocalypse, and works
by the nineteenth century Angevine sculptor, David d’Angers. In the
region, you will see the lush vineyards of Anjou, enjoy the delicious specialties
of the diverse local cuisine, and marvel at the magnificent medieval and
Renaissance castles of the Loire. Students will also experience such
cultural events as the nationally celebrated Fête de la Musique and
Fête du Cinéma (music and film festivals), and most of all,
they will meet the friendly Angevine people, whose French accent has been
long considered the most beautiful in the nation.

The UNCG
in Angers Summer Program is a joint venture between the Department of Romance
Languages at UNC-Greensboro and the Université
d’Angers, France.
THE
FACULTY
Dr.
Roberto Campo: FRE 313 and FRE 331/FRE232 :
Dr. Campo is an Associate Professor of French who has taught at UNCG since
1989. He inaugurated the Angers summer program 2002 and co-directed
the program that year and again in 2004. His research specialty is
the literature and culture of the French Renaissance (the sixteenth century).
His knowledge of the Anjou and Tourraine regions of France, where the French
royalty and nobility of the Renaissance enjoyed magnificent castles and
often ruled their realms, is therefore extensive.
Dr.
David Fein: FRE 203/204: Dr.
Fein, who has served on the French faculty at UNCG since 1976, co-directed
the Angers summer program in 2003. At various points in his career
he has taught Spanish, served as Department Head for Romance Languages,
worked as an ETS-appointed reader for AP French exams, and co-authored
a French textbook. His research specialty is late medieval French
literature, but he enjoys teaching and learning about all aspects of French
culture.
Ms. Sarah Peterson: FRE 102: Sarah Peterson is a graduate student
pursuing her Master of Arts in Romance Languages with a concentration in
French at UNCG. She is presently completing her coursework for the
degree, plans to begin her thesis during 2006 spring semester, and ultimately
wishes to pursue a PhD in French with the goal of teaching French language,
culture, and literature at the university level. In addition, she
is currently serving as a French teaching assistant for the Department
of Romance Languages; previously, she worked for us as a Graduate Assistant,
a technology specialist, and a French tutor. In Angers, Sarah will
teach 102, provide tutoring in the program, and join Drs. Campo and Fein
on program excursions with the students.
-
Note: Students in the Program
will also benefit from regular contact with native-French Graduate Assistants
(or "accompagnateurs"/"accompagnatrices") provided by the CUFCO (continual
learning office) of the Université d'Angers.
