  • FRE 554: Topics in French Poetry:  "Le Poète et Son Oeuvre" dans la Poésie Amoureuse de la Renaissance Française:  Love poetry enjoyed an extraordinary revival in Renaissance France.  Not since Lucretius, Ovid, and Propertius in Classical Antiquity, or Petrarch in fourteenth-century Italy, had Cupid and Venus received such a welcome from the earthly emissaries of the Muses.  Indeed, for many, the sixteenth century remains the golden age of  love poetry in French literature.  This course explores the theme of love in the works of six of the most prominent poets of the period: Clément Marot, Maurice Scève, Louise Labé, Joachim Du Bellay, Pierre de Ronsard, and Catherine des Roches.  Taught by Roberto Campo
