Undergraduates Seeking Licensure
in Teacher Education

1.    Keep in close contact with your advisor(s). 

2.    Purchase and carefully read the Teacher Education Handbook (available at the UNCG Bookstore).

3.    Pass all three sections of the Pre-Professional Skills Tests (PPST) or the Computer-Based Equivalent at Sylvan Learning Center.  Required scores:

PPST - Reading:  176
CBT - Reading:  176
PPST - Writing:  173
CBT - Writing: 173
PPST - Math:  173
CBT - Math:  173
*Information regarding registration can be obtained from the Counseling and Testing Center (12 Gove Building) or the Office of Student Information and Advising (324 Curry Building). 

4.    Apply for admission to UNCG Teacher Education in The Teachers Academy (319 Curry Building) by the end of the sophomore year or upon earning junior status (completion of 60 semester hours of course work). Students must be admitted to Teacher education by the last day of the fall semester in order to be eligible to student teach the following fall, or by the last day of the spring semester in order to be eligible to student teach the following spring.

Requirements for Admission to Teacher Education:
A. Successful completion of all three sections of the PPST/CBT
B. Minimum grade point average of 2.75, cumulative and in the major
C. Recommendation by the French or Spanish Undergraduate Advisor
D. Transfer students who are otherwise qualified (in terms of the 60 semester hour requirement) must have completed at least 12 semester hours at UNCG. The 12 semester hours shall be waived for any transfer student who meets all of the aforementioned requirements to Teacher Education. The grade point average for transfer students will be the transferable GPA as computed by the Office of Admissions.

5.    Request a course audit from the Office of Student Academic Services (159 Mossman Building) during the first semester of your junior year.  Discuss the results with your advisor during course registration. 

6.    Apply for admission to Student Teaching in The Teachers Academy (321 Curry Building) between January 15 and February 15 of the year before you plan to student teach.  Student teaching is offered during the Spring semester only.  You must have been admitted to Teacher Education to be eligible to apply for Student Teaching. 

Requirements for Admission to Student Teaching:
*These requirements are in addition to those for admission to the Teacher Education Program as listed above under Item 4.
A. Grade point average of 2.75, cumulative and in the major
B. Departmental approval
C. Must have completed the following specific courses relating to teacher education requirements prior to beginning of the professional/student teaching semester: 

  AULER/GER requirements as identified within each major 
  CUI 202 or HDF 302 Human Development
  CUI 450 Psychological Foundations of Education
  CUI 465** Student Teaching and Seminar (12 semester hours)
  CUI 470 Reading Education for Secondary and Special Subject Teachers 
  CUI 527* Teaching Second Languages:  Elementary/Middle Schools
  CUI 545 Diverse Learners (Spring semester of junior year) 
  CUI 552* Teaching Practices and Curriculum in Foreign Languages
  ELC 381 The Institution of Education 
  HEA 201 Personal Health
  Optional:
  LIS 120 Introduction to Instructional Technology for Educational Settings

D. Methods courses (CUI 552 and CUI 527) are offered in the Fall semester preceding student teaching.  No courses may be taken during the student teaching semester.

7.    Apply for the Spanish or French Specialty Area PRAXIS Exams early in the Fall semester of the senior year.  Please have PRAXIS Specialty Area Exams completed by March of the senior year. 

8.    Complete the Piedmont Alliance form, which can be obtained along with the student teaching application from Melanie Nickerson in the School of Education (321 Curry Building).

9.    Begin a Credential File in Career Services (208 Foust Building) during the semester prior to student teaching.  Check the status of your Credential File periodically. 

10.    Apply for Teacher Licensure in The Teachers Academy (319 Curry Building) one to two weeks prior to degree completion. Do not mail anything to Raleigh!
