La lengua de las mariposas (1999) (Butterfly, in Spanish with English subtitles) by director José Luis Cuerda. Presenter: Dr. Carmen Sotomayor, The University of North Carolina at Greensboro We open the festival through the tender eyes of a shy young boy, Moncho, frightened about starting school and whose relationship with Don Gregorio, his teacher, sets his mind at ease and helps him to begin a transition into adulthood. When the War erupts on July 18, their lives are changed forever. Cuerda's mix of carefree sweetness and foreboding political undercurrent makes the film feel like a children's movie hijacked by the loss of innocence that eventually grips Moncho. The political winds change, and the boy sees everyone he cares about land in grave danger, forced to choose between persecution and painful, shameful denouncement of their ideology. |

Presenter: Dr. Jordi Marí, North Carolina State University Dragon Rapide focuses on the weeks before the July 18, 1936 appraisal in Northern Africa. The "Dragon Rapide" was the name of the British plane that carried the General Francisco Franco from the Canary Islands to Morocco. That flight marked the beginning of the end of the Republican government in Spain. The movie references the complicated political situation of the day and allows the viewer to submerge into the different political interests and ideologies that surrounded the failed coup-de-état and catapulted the Spanish Civil War. |

¡Ay Carmela! (1986) (in Spanish with English subtitles) by director Carlos Saura. Presenter: Dr. Ana Hontanilla, The University of North Carolina at Greensboro ¡Ay, Carmela! presents the difficulties of war in the Republican and Nationalist zones. Carmela, Paulino and Gustavete, traveling entertainers trouping through Spain to perform their act before Republican troops, are imprisoned in Franco-controlled territory. Certain to be shot, they are given a chance to live when a former theater director, now a Lieutenant with the Italian troops fighting alongside the Germans in support of Franco, asks them to put on a show glorifying Mussolini and Hitler. Taken from a stage play by José Sanchís Sinisterra, Saura expands the action to show the bombed and ruined towns, but the film remains more a character drama than a war film. |

We close the festival through the eyes of another child, Ofelia, whose fantasy world allows the viewer to experience the harsh reality of the Franquist repression. Ofelia's stepfather, the Falangist Captain Vidal, viciously hunts the Spanish maquis, guerrilla fighters who resists Franco’s regime in the region.
