Major in Spanish

The major begins at the 300 level. A minimum number of 30 hours at the 300 level and above is required to complete the major. Students seeking licensure should consult their advisor for details. Courses taught in English may not be used for credit toward the major, second major, minor or second academic concentration.

To maintain the high quality of language instruction at UNCG, students declaring a major in either French or Spanish must sit for an oral competence evaluation during the semester in which they will first take a 300-level course in their major. This evaluation is part of our ongoing program assessment and in no way affects the academic record of students. The undergraduate advisor and/or instructor will notify majors with pertinent information at the time of the evaluation.

The minimum of 30 semester hours at the 300 level and above must include the following:

1. SPA 301 "Advanced Spanish" (Pr. 204 or equivalent, or departmental permission) 3 hrs.
2. Literature - 9 hrs. - three courses including:
   1. SPA 351 "Approaches to Hispanic Literature" (Pr. 301 or departmental permission)
   2. One course from SPA 401, 402, 403, 404, 405 (Pr. 315 and 351 or departmental permission)
   3. One course from SPA 502 or 504 (Pr. one 400-level course in Hispanic literature or departmental permission)
3. Composition - 6 hrs. - two courses including:
   1. SPA 315 "Intermediate Composition" (Pr. 301 or departmental permission)
   2. SPA 415 "Advanced Composition" (Pr. 311 and 315 or equivalent)
4. Conversation - 3 hrs. - one course chosen from:
   1. SPA 311 (Pr. 301 or departmental permission)
   2. SPA 312 (Pr. 311 or departmental permission) (no longer offered after Spring 2006)
   3. SPA 313 (Pr. 204 or departmental permission)
   4. SPA 411 (Pr. 311 or departmental permission)
5. Civilization - 3 hrs. - one course chosen from:
   1. SPA 332 (Pr. 301 or departmental permission)
   2. SPA 334 (Pr. 301 or departmental permission)
   3. SPA 532 (Pr. one 400-level course in Hispanic literature or departmental permission)
   4. SPA 534 (Pr. one 400-level course in Hispanic literature or departmental permission)
   5. SPA 535 (Pr. one 400-level course in Hispanic literature or departmental permission)
6. SPA Electives - 6 hrs. - two courses
   1. Electives may include 416 "Phonetics,", 499 "Internship", 516 "Intro. to Syntax" or any other courses not already taken above.

At least one course at the 500 level must be included in the major. No more than 6 hours of Conversation may be counted towards the major. No requirement for the major may be met by a grade lower than C-.
