Spanish as a Second Academic Concentration
The Department of Romance Languages will recommend the candidate for
"A" licensure in Spanish as a second teaching field after successful
completion of 24 semester hours of required course work. The principal teaching
field will normally be another foreign language. Students with a major in
another discipline who are seeking licensure in Spanish should consult with the
Coordinator for Teacher Licensure in Foreign Languages (344 Curry Building) as
soon as possible.
The student must complete 24 semester hours at the 300 level and above,
including:
- SPA 301 (3 hrs.) "Advanced Spanish"
(Pr. 204 or equivalent, or departmental permission)
- Literature - 6 hrs. - two courses including:
- SPA 351 "Approaches to Hispanic Literature" (Pr. 301 or
departmental permission)
- One course in Hispanic literature at the 400 level (Pr. 315 and 351 and/or
departmental permission) or 500 level (Pr. one 400 level course in
Hispanic literature or departmental permission)
- Composition - 3 hrs. - one course chosen from:
- SPA 315 "Intermediate Composition" (Pr. 301 or departmental permission)
- SPA 415 "Advanced Composition" (Pr. 311 and 315 or equivalent)
- Conversation - 3 hrs. - one course chosen from:
- SPA 311 (Pr. 301 or departmental permission)
- SPA 312 (Pr. 311 or departmental permission) (no longer offered after Spring 2006)
- SPA 313 (Pr. 204 or departmental permission)
- SPA 411 (Pr. 311 or departmental permission)
- Civilization - 3 hrs. - one course chosen from:
- SPA 332 (Pr. 301 or departmental permission)
- SPA 334 (Pr. 301 or departmental permission)
- SPA 532 (Pr. one 400-level course in Hispanic literature or departmental permission)
- SPA 534 (Pr. one 400-level course in Hispanic literature or departmental permission)
- SPA 535 (Pr. one 400-level course in Hispanic literature or departmental permission)
- SPA Electives - 6 hrs. - two courses
NOTE: Teacher licensure candidates must take SPA 416 Phonetics as one of their
elective courses.
