One of the most exciting features about research at UNCG is its breadth. It encompasses the performing and visual arts, education, business, social and behavioral sciences, health sciences, and natural and physical sciences.

In fiscal year 2002 UNCG faculty published over 60 books and 570 journal articles and had over 1900 public performances and presentations. In the past fiscal year UNCG was awarded a record $36.5 million in contracts and grants for research, service, and creative projects.

Last year UNCG implemented a program to heighten the awareness of the university’s research strengths. The result was the Research Areas of Emphasis (ARE). Five broad areas of research to discover new knowledge and improve the quality of life were identified:

Drs. Marion O’Brien and Chris Payne are conducting investigations about the impact of early child-care experiences on a child’s development, typical of work in Learning and Development.
The seminal work that Dr. Loren Schweninger has done to unearth information about the history of slavery in the United States belongs under the domain of Human Diversity and Culture or Environment and Society.

Dr. Parke Rublee
The work of Drs. Vince Henrich and Parke Rublee, co-creators of a revolutionary new method to test water supplies, represents projects found in Health and the Life Sciences and Environment and Society.
Dr. John Salmon’s long-time work with the incomparable Dave Brubeck captures some of his compositions that otherwise might never have come to light and represents a creative activity in Performance, Composition, and Communication.
