Simple Pleasures Manual
The Simple Pleasures research team investigated the effects of 30 handmade recreational items on the behavior of nursing home residents with dementia. Twenty-three items were found therapeutically valuable in nursing home use. The Simple Pleasures manual includes instructions for building and directions for using these items.

Program Overview:
The Department of Recreation, Tourism, and Hospitality Management is offering a second summer session course (June 25th– July 30st) that includes a 22 day trip to Ecuador, South America. This trip is designed to teach the student about international tourism planning. The course includes in-class instruction prior to leaving for Ecuador and will also meet the week following the trip for review and discussion.
While in Ecuador, students will spend time in Quito and Ayampe. Students will develop a comprehensive tourism plan for the town of Ayampe while observing and experience the tourism product of Ecuador. Student s will attend classes, collect data, meet with stakeholders and participate in organized excursions. There will be allotted free time during some of the afternoons and weekends to allow students time to study and explore Ecuador.
UNCG students will get six academic credits. The course carries a SVL marker. Space is limited to 12 students. (Subject to final approval)
Approximate Cost:
The project cost of the program is $2350 (subject to change and final approval)

• June 25th-26th Location – Greensboro, USA
• Activities – In-Class instruction, initiate group projects and tourism audit, finalize trip plans
•June 30th - Arrive in Quito, Ecuador
•July 1st – 2ndLocation – Quito
• Activities – Group work and programming for Ayampe
• Tours - Downtown Quito, Mitad Del Mundo, Telefirico
• July 3th – 17th Location – Ayampe, Alandaluz, & Puerto Lopez
• Activities – Tourism audit, School programming, beach beautification, community assessment, present final project
• Tours Puerto Lopez, Jipijapa, Montanita, Cantalapiedra,
• July 18th – 21th Location –Quito, & Otavalo
• Activities - Submit final written project
• Tours – Otavalo
• July 22th Location – Return Home
Information Session (You must attend one to be eligible to go on the trip)
Payment Schedule:
• December 12th 2008: $500 non-refundable fee
• January 21st, 2009: $600
• February 18th 2009: $600
• March 25 2009: Final Payment of $650(or evidence of financial aid award)
• June 1st 2009: Travel plans must be finalized

Grants/Scholarships:
UNCG Students may apply for a travel grant from the International Program Center (deadline March 15th, 2009). Visit the UNCG Endowment for International Program website for more information. Qualified students may also apply for Summer Financial Aid (at the Office Financial Aid) after March 1st, 2009. Additional scholarship and funding may be available.
