Professional Development Fund

In 2003 the Student Affairs Staff Development Recognition and Appreciation Subcommittee launched the first annual Student Affairs Auction to raise money for the Professional Development Fund. Members of the Division were asked to donate (or arrange to have donated) items or services to be put up for bid either in a “silent” or “live” auction which enlivened the activities of the end of year Picnic. A total of $1,800 was raised. In addition, Vice-Chancellor Carol Disque matched the $1,800 raised, providing a start-up fund of $3,600. The second annual auction, held at the end of year picnic in May 2004, brought in over $1,700. This amount was again matched by the Vice Chancellor's Discretionary fund and made available $3,600 in professional development funds to members of the Division of Student Affairs. The 2005 auction continued the upward trend raising $2,000. With Dr. Disque’s matching funds, the Committee had $4,000 to disburse for this academic year. Purpose

The fund is to provide a means for professional development monies that you cannot currently receive within your department or for acquiring resources which would benefit the Division as a whole. For example, there may be a person in your department responsible for web development. However, you too would like to know how to develop web pages. Other examples of professional resources for which these funds could be used include:

  • Resource books for the Division
  • Software that can be used by multiple departments/offices
  • Professional conferences, workshops, seminars, or training sessions
  • Online educational courses, such as the e-learning series sponsored by such national organizations as NASPA and ACPA
  • Special projects that would benefit students and/or staff.

Guidelines

A committee, comprised of representatives from various departments within Student Affairs, will review applications based on the following criteria:

  • Are these monies that cannot be accessed within the employee’s department, the division or through training that can be acquired on campus?
  • Does the employee have support from his/her supervisor?
  • Does this create opportunity or additional resources for the division?

Application Process

Funds are made available once each semester. Any permanent (and time-limited) employee in the division has the opportunity to apply for these funds. Applications for Spring Semester funds will be accepted soon. Review of the applications will take place over the course of 2 weeks following the deadline and all applicants will be notified of their grant status soon thereafter. The application can be submitted online. Watch this site in the Fall for news when the next round of applications will be accepted.
