Recruitment of Students through Alternative Routes to Teacher Training

Frequently Asked Questions

Below are some of the most frequently asked questions our students ask about RESTART....please email us your questions  at restart@uncg.edu if they are not addressed below.

Q. Am I eligible to enroll in Project RESTART if I already have a 4-year degree?

A.  The purpose of Project RESTART is to provide support and financial assistance to individuals who want to pursue a 4-year degree in special education.  Individuals who are either working as a special education assistant or who have community college credits/degree will be given first priority for eligibility in Project RESTART.

Q. How much money do I get if I participate in Project RESTART?

A. A full-time student (minimum of 12 credit hours) receives $6,000 for the fall, spring, and summer semesters. This money is awarded by semester- Fall: $2600, Spring: $2600, and Summer: $800.  Part-time students’ (less than 12 credit hours) financial assistance will be prorated.  The financial support provided by RESTART exceeds the cost of tuition, allowing students to use the additional money for other needed materials such as textbooks.

Q.  Can I take classes part-time or do I have to be a full-time student?

A. RESTART participants can take classes on either a part-time or full-time basis.
Financial support will be provided according to number of courses a student is enrolled in.

Q.  What happens if I don't complete the program?  Do I have to pay back the money?

A. If a participant chooses to leave the program without completing a 4-year degree, the U.S. Department of Education will expect repayment of the money given to the participant.

Q.  How long do I have to teach after completing my degree?  Can I teach only in NC?

A. After a RESTART participant graduates, he/she is required to teach within special education for TWO years for every year that RESTART provided financial assistance.  Graduates can teach anywhere in the United States to fulfill his/her obligation to Project RESTART.

Q.  What happens if I don't teach the specified amount of time?  Do I have to pay back
the money?

A. As stated above, you are expected to pay back any money provided to by RESTART if you do NOT complete your program and receive a 4 year degree OR if you graduate but do not fulfill your teaching commitment. For example, if you receive financial support from RESTART for two years but only teach one year following your graduation, you will be expected to pay back the money for the second year.

Q.  Do I have to pay for my tuition first and then get the money, or does RESTART take care of it for me? What about the cost of books, etc?

A.  RESTART is considered part of your financial package.  Your award is placed in your account here at UNCG and automatically pays for your tuition and fees first.  The amount remaining when all UNCG bills are paid will be mailed to the students to be used for other expenses related to attending the university.

Q.  How long can I expect to be supported by RESTART if I continue to meet the program requirements and expectations?

A. RESTART is currently funded through 2011. If your degree is not completed at that time, other financial aid sources should be explored.
