Recruitment of Students through Alternative Routes to Teacher Training

Dr. Stephanie Kurtts is the Director for Project RESTART

Stephanie A. Kurtts received her Ph.D in Curriculum and Teaching from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 1998 with an emphasis in inclusive and special education.
She received her M.Ed. in Special Education at East Carolina University, Greenville, NC in 1975.  She has been a special education teacher who has worked in the classroom at the elementary, middle, and secondary level.  As an assistant professor at UNCG, she has taught undergraduate and graduate level courses in the Department of Specialized Education Services in instructional methods for children with disabilities, assessment for children with disabilities, issues in special education, and consultation and collaboration.

Dr. Kurtts is the Principal Investigator of Project RESTART, an $800,000.00 personnel preparation grant for nontraditional adult students returning to school to become special education teachers.  Dr. Kurtts has presented papers on preparing preservice teachers to meet the needs of children with disabilities in inclusive settings at the Teacher Education Division of the Council for Exceptional Children, the American Educational Research Association, the international conference on Technology and Individuals with Disabilities.

In June 2004 Dr. Kurtts will be presenting a paper on universal design for learning for inclusive learning environments at the China-US Conference on Students with Disabilities in Beijing, China. 

Dr. Kurtts’ research interests include teacher preparation for inclusion, preservice experiences that impact teacher attitudes and beliefs toward inclusion, and peer coaching.
