The 2004 institute, Assessing the General Curriculum for Diverse Learners, will address such topics as (1) for whom do we plan inclusion and why, (2) how do we organize staff and resources for inclusion across school levels, and (3) what instructional strategies and methods are effective for diverse learners in inclusive classrooms?This institute will once again draw teachers from our area schools systems and our RESTART participants as they explore and practice instructional strategies that are research-based to effectively meet diverse learner needs in inclusive classrooms.We will also be working with our general and special education teachers to assist them in their mentoring of our preservice teachers who are part of RESTART and the undergraduate program in special education at UNCG.
The 2003 Summer Institute-Instructional Teams for Inclusive Education:Facilitating the Future included topics such as (1) effective communication of instructional teams, (2) defining roles and responsibilities in meeting diverse learner needs, (3) applying the concept of universal design to instruction, (4) collaborative practice in schools, (5) teams and technology, and (6) developing competencies to work with children and their families who are from diverse backgrounds.Over 60 educational professionals attended this institute along with our RESTART students. In 2003, we were fortunate to have acquired nationally recognized presenters in the field of collaborative practice, Dr. Lynne Cook from the California State University at Northridge and Dr. Marilyn Friend, Chair of the Department of Specialized Education Services, UNCG, as part of our institute.In addition, we also hosted Dr. Jewell Cooper, a dynamic and informative member of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at UNCG who is an accomplished educator concerning diversity in the schools.
