Initial Advising

The University offers a wonderful orientation program called SOAR (Spartan Orientation Advising & Registration). Several of our faculty are involved in SOAR helping out with advising and registration. This gives us the opportunity to make sure that the Interpreting majors are signed up for the appropriate ASL class since there are sections for majors and non majors. Interpreting majors should start the ASL classes their first semester because they will need to develop a level of proficiency in the language before beginning the process of interpreting. Sometimes our faculty may not be able to attend a SOAR meeting and students are advised by other SOAR advisors who are aware of the courses needed by interpreting students. We encourage students to touch base with us the first week to ensure they are on the right track.

Ongoing Advising

Each semester students are required to meet with their advisor to review their course of study and to determine which courses to take the next semester. Advisors will have a schedule on their door for students to sign up for appointment times. Advising and registration occurs after fall/spring break for 3-4 weeks. At that time students will receive their advising code. You are unable to register for classes without this code.

In the Interpreting Program, the advising time is also an opportunity for advisors to Review a student’s progress and address skills, dispositions, involvement in the Deaf Community, technical standards, and to revisit the “I Understand” statements. Students need to bring the following to their advising session:

  • Community Lab Log
  • Tentative Course of Study developed by your advisor your 2 or 3 rd year
  • Course choices which match your schedule
  • A print out of your degree evaluation
    •

      Transfer Students

The University’s Registrar’s Office will determine transfer equivalences for courses taken at other institutions with the exception of courses taken in the Interpreting major Advisors in the Interpreting Program will determine course equivalences and will inform the Registrar’s Office of which courses transfer. Contact Glenda Torres to schedule an appointment to determine your plan of study.

question markFrequently Asked Questions about Transfering

I have taken three classes in sign language at a community college. Will they transfer in?

There are several Community Colleges to teach American Sign Language using a curriculum and methodology similar to the one at UNCG, however, there are many sign language classes taught at where students learn sign vocabulary rather than the lexical and linguistic aspects of ASL. Because there is so much variance, students will need to take the Placement Exam to determine which level they should enter and which courses will be accepted as transfers.

If I am at a community college now, how do I know what courses will transfer in?

The University Registrar’s Office has a very helpful webpage on Transfer Student Information. There is a section called Transfer Equivalency Course Search which lists courses in the community college systems and what courses they equate to at UNCG.

Is it a good idea to finish my general education courses at a community college and then transfer in for courses in the major?

Community colleges can be quite convenient and offer many courses that will transfer, however, UNCG requires certain courses which are writing intensive and speaking intensive as well as courses which have a Global and/or Global Non-western marker. Many of the general liberal arts classes in Literature, Fine Arts, Historical Perspectives on Western Culture and Philosophy/Religion/Ethical Perspectives are also marked as A Global and Global Non-Western course which allows a student to satisfy both requirements with one course.

Another reason to begin your studies at UNCG as soon as possible is to get into the course sequence for all the American Sign Language classes and be involved in events sponsored by the University to help bring students interact with the Deaf Community.
