CRYSTAL WOOD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

crystal woodThis memorial scholarship is in honor of Crystal Wood who was a student in the interpreting program. Crystal was a vivacious student who would roller-blade to class and entertain everyone with her wonderful sense of humor. Crystal spent a lot of her time volunteering at the Central North Carolina School for the Deaf and the children adored her. Her goal was to be an interpreter for deaf and hard-of-hearing children in public schools.

On April 27, 1999 Crystal tragically died in a car wreck. Students and staff at UNCG and at the Deaf school were devastated. We cherish the memories we have of her and are grateful to her family who honor her by providing a scholarship for other students who are pursuing her same dream. Her parents Lelia and Larry Wood and their children, Melissa Wood and Michael Wood, have established the Crystal Dawn Wood Scholarship Fund awarding a scholarship to a junior and a senior in the program each year. Recipients are chosen by the faculty who take into account merit, need, and the same dedication and love that Crystal had for the Deaf Community.

PROJECT CONNECT

chalk boardProject Connect, a four-year grant from the U.S. Department of Education provides stipends for students who are pursuing a degree in interpreting. Students are awarded an amount which pays for their tuition, fees, and other expenses. Students give back by committing to work as an interpreter in the public schools one year for each semester they are awarded. There is an immense need for highly qualified interpreters to serve the needs of deaf and hard-of hearing children who are in inclusion programs.
