Education of Deaf Children - Educational Interpreter

The Education of Deaf Children Program is a four-year program leading to a bachelor of science degree. Within the Education of Deaf Children major, students may choose either Teacher Preparation or Educational Interpreting. The Interdisciplinary Educational Interpreter/Transliterator Project prepares students to become educational interpreters in the public school system. The course of study includes a broad liberal arts background designed to expand a student's spectrum of knowledge and prepare them to interpret content in various subject areas. Trainees take courses in regular education with an emphasis on the exceptional learner in the classroom. Courses in education of deaf children along with core courses in educational interpreting prepares trainees for their diverse roles and responsibilities as members of the educational team. Course work emphasizes knowledge and skills necessary to interpret and tutor deaf and hard-of-hearing children with varying learning styles and those with specific learning disabilities. Because of the diversity of students in the public school systems, students receive training in American Sign Language, Pidgin Sign English, manually coded English systems, Cued Speech, Oral Transliterating, and Deaf-Blind Interpreting.

Many graduates from the program are currently working as educational interpreters in the public school systesms. Because of their degree, some of these graduates have been hired as lead interpreters or interpreter coordinators. Others have gone on to graduate school and one graduate is now teaching ASL courses and offering vocational traiing in the area of educational interpreting at a public high school in another state
