Message from the Chancellor

The University of North Carolina at Greensboro is committed to being the leading student centered university in North Carolina . To fulfill this mission requires the dedication, enthusiasm, and competence of everyone at the university. We are committed to providing an environment free from recognized health and safety hazards which may cause injury or illness to our community and being able to respond to hazards that threaten our community. It is my charge to each member of the university community that we conduct all activities in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, and university safety and emergency action policies. Our mission as a university requires many varied jobs and tasks and there is not one that is so important that it cannot be performed safely.

Each of us makes choices on a daily basis that will affect our safety and health and in many instances the safety and health and well-being of others. All members of the university community will put the safety and health of our students, colleagues, and the public in front of all other considerations. Safety and health will be considered part of our basic, everyday responsibilities and pursuits, in concert with teaching, research and service.

To assist in making our campus a safer place, the Office of Safety provides the definitive advice and leadership for the university in safety and health matters. The Office of Safety is a service-oriented organization dedicated to support the university's overall mission by inspiring a cultural environment of shared responsibility. This is accomplished by providing support services that include, and are not limited to, education, resources, special services, oversight, and guidance in the following areas:

  • Radiation Safety
  • Fire and Life Safety
  • Biological Safety
  • Chemical and Laboratory Safety
  • Occupational Safety
  • Emergency Management
  • Hazardous Waste Management

All of the people who dedicate themselves to the university's mission are the heart of the university. Understanding that all of them are our most valuable resource, we will do all that is reasonable to protect them. Each of us is expected to support this effort by contributing the necessary resources and time to ensure that my goal of a safe university environment is achieved.
