How are Fire Extinguishers Maintained at UNCG

The Office of Safety maintains a fire extinguisher inspection program for most campus fire extinguishers.  A team member checks the charge status and general condition of each extinguisher every thirty days, as required by the North Carolina Fire Prevention Code.  In addition, an annual inspection is conducted to determine the need for off site maintenance.

Fire extinguishers have an attached bar-code on them which is scanned by the inspector to record the inspection into a database.  If the extinguisher is deficient in some way, the inspector notes it in his reader then contacts the Physical Plant to request that the extinguisher be replaced and serviced.

Most fire extinguishers on campus are equipped with a gauge to determine if they are fully charged.  Typically if the needle indicates in the green portion of the face, it is charged and ready for use.  Some extinguishers, primarily in laboratories do not have gauges and should be assumed to be charged if the yellow plastic "seal" is in place.  (These extinguishers are inspected for charge by checking their weight.)  If you see an extinguisher that is missing its yellow plastic seal or is discharged, please contact Physical Plant at 334-3456 or workrequest@uncg.edu to request a replacement.  In a Residence Hall contact Residence Life Facilties Maintenance at 334-3498 or FIXIT for a replacement.
