In 1990, the organization Arts Action Against Domestic Violence created the first Silent Witnesses - life-sized wooden figures, each with the name of a woman whose life ended violently - for the 26 women lost as a result of domestic violence that year. One more Silent Witness represented the women whose murders went uncounted. The figures were originally displayed in Minnesota, silently escorted by women into the State Capitol Rotunda.
This powerful statement impacted viewers, and the project became a national initiative. Many more Silent Witnesses have been created, and the initiative continues to stand against domestic violence.
