The Counseling & Testing Center

New and Improved!

Access to CTC services has changed! CTC services can now be accessed a variety of ways, based on your needs!

What Type of Services Do I Need

Services at The Counseling & Testing Center (CTC) are offered by appointment. However, we aware that emergencies requiring immediate attention can exist for students and our same-day Walk-In services are designed to assist these students. The information below will help you evaluate your needs to determine whether it is appropriate to meet for a Crisis or Urgent appointment or whether your needs would be better addressed by scheduling the next available Consultation appointment.

Please read the following descriptions and identify any items that apply to you:

  • _ I am currently so upset that I may be unable to keep myself or others safe.
  • _ I have a current plan to attempt suicide or to harm someone else.
  • _ I have been physically or sexually assaulted within the last few days.
  • _ Someone close to me has died within the last few days.
  • _ I am having strange experiences such as hearing voices or seeing things that others do not.
  • _ I have knowledge of another person being abused or assaulted.
  • _ I have witnessed a traumatic event within the last few days.

Acute crisis intervention is provided for students who are experiencing an emotionally critical situation that could compromise their safety or the safety of others. No appointment is needed. Walk-In Services - “Urgent”

If you feel you need to be seen urgently, we have Walk-In hours available Monday – Thursday 12 pm - 5 pm and Friday 12 pm - 4 pm.

During Walk-In Hours:

  • If you are a new client, you will be asked to complete initial paperwork to help us determine your needs.
  • You will be seen by one of our Walk-In counselors as soon as possible.
  • Students are usually seen in order of arrival, though counselors may need to make occasional exceptions.
  • Since different situations require varying lengths of time, the office staff can only tell you how many students are ahead of you - not how long it will take to be seen.
  • Be advised that when being seen through our Walk-In service, your counselor will be able to meet with you briefly and develop an initial plan for support, but you will likely need to return for a full appointment.
  • Depending on your needs and appointment availability, you may not work with the same therapist for counseling as you met with during your Walk-In appointment.

Scheduled Appointments - “Next Available”

Most persons seeking counseling will be scheduled for the next available appointment. To schedule an appointment, call our office at 336-334-5874, or come by during business hours. We are on the 2nd floor of the Anna M. Gove Student Health Center. Patient parking is available by permit only. You can obtain a permit at the front desk of Student Health Services.

We typically schedule appointments within one to two weeks. All of the CTC therapists assist students with a variety of mental health, developmental, and situational concerns. We will do our best to accommodate requests, but do keep in mind that requesting a specific counselor and/or very limited availability may not necessarily result in the first available appointment, so you may have to wait slightly longer for your first appointment.

Center Information

Initial Contact:

At your first appointment or first contact with CTC, you will be asked to provide some information which will help us determine how best to help you meet your counseling goals.

Consultations:

Scheduled first appointments are called “Consultations” and are 50 minutes in length. The first half hour will be spent completing paperwork, followed by a meeting with your therapist.

Walk-In:

If you come in for Walk-In services, you will be asked to complete the “What Type of Services Do I Need” form (Click to Link to Form) to help determine what type of appointment would best meet your needs. If it is determined that your needs are urgent, you will be asked to complete initial paperwork before being seen by the Walk-In/Urgent counselor.

Returning Clients:

If you are a returning client and it has been a semester or more since you have had a counseling appointment, you may need to complete initial paperwork in order to update us on your information and concerns. Students who have been clients at CTC are not eligible to become graduate student trainees here.

Initial Appointment

Your first appointment is designed to assess concerns, provide immediate support, and develop a plan to address your concerns.

Your plan might include:

  1. A course of brief therapy at CTC for problems that are well defined and can be reasonably resolved in a short period of time;
  2. Follow up visits to help stabilize a currently stressful situation and to continue assessment of helpful interventions;
  3. Participation in a group or workshop at CTC;
  4. Referral to community therapy when concerns require more long-term counseling to resolve adequately.
  5. If a medication evaluation would be helpful and the student is interested in this, referral to a SHS psychiatrist can be made.

Subsequent Appointments

Counseling is most effective when clients are ready to actively participate in establishing and working on treatment goals, completing assignments, and discussing difficult issues.

We ask that you call us at 336-334-5874 at least twenty-four hours in advance to cancel or reschedule a session. The sooner you cancel your appointment, the more likely it is that another student can make use of that time. If you are fifteen minutes late for a scheduled appointment, it may be cancelled and you will be responsible for rescheduling. Services may be terminated if you have an excessive number of cancellations or no shows.

Group Therapy & Workshops

Some concerns are most effectively addressed in a group therapy or workshop setting. Therefore, your therapist may discuss with you the option of joining a therapy group or attending an offered workshop. Group therapy and/or workshops offer benefits such as learning valuable skills and experiencing a sense of belonging and acceptance. We offer a variety of groups and workshops each year, depending on students’ needs and interests.

  • If it is a therapist’s judgment that there is a substantial risk that a client will do physical harm to an identifiable other person (or persons) in the near future, the therapist will take steps to protect the safety of the endangered person (or persons).
  • If information is shared with a therapist indicating that a child or dependent adult is currently being abused, state law requires that the information is reported to the Department of Social Services serving the area where the child or dependent adult lives.
  • If ordered to do so by a judge as part of judicial proceedings, the Counseling & Testing Center may release information contained in your counseling record.

Your Rights

As counselors, psychologists, and social workers, we uphold ethical and professional standards. If you have any questions or concerns about your treatment at the Center, please bring these issues to the attention of your therapist. We request that you let your therapist know of your intentions, so that other treatment options may be discussed.
