First Contact

Once you stop by our office to set up your initial appointment, you will be asked to complete some paperwork which will help us determine the type of services you need. One of our therapists will then review your paperwork and you will be scheduled for an initial appointment based on your needs. Students who have been clients here are not eligible to become graduate student Trainees here.

Initial Appointment

During your first appointment, you will be encouraged to discuss your concerns and goals with a staff counselor/psychologist/social worker. Together, you and your therapist will determine what services will be most effective for you. If the Center is unable to provide the type of service you need, you will be given the option of selecting an appropriate agency or specialist in the community.

Subsequent Appointments

Counseling is most effective when clients are ready to actively participate in establishing and working on treatment goals, completing assignments, and discussing difficult issues. The range of our individual counseling services is typically up to eight sessions per semester, and is based on student needs and Center time limitations. We ask that you call us at 336-334-5874 twenty four hours in advance to cancel or reschedule a session so that another student might make use of that time. If you are fifteen minutes late for a scheduled appointment, it may be cancelled and you will be responsible for rescheduling. Services may be terminated if you have an excessive number of cancellations or no shows.

Group Therapy

Some concerns are most effectively addressed in a group therapy setting. Therefore, your therapist may discuss with you the option of joining a therapy group. Group therapy offers benefits such as experiencing a sense of belonging and acceptance and mutual learning from peers. We offer a variety of groups each year, depending on students’ needs and interests.

Your Rights

As counselors, psychologists, and social workers, we uphold ethical and professional standards.
