Psychiatric Services

Increasing understanding of the mind-body connection has led to the development of effective medical treatments for a variety of mental health problems that have a biological component. Student Health Services provides psychiatric care for enrolled UNCG students. Psychiatric services are free of charge for those students who have paid the Student Health fee and are fee for service for those students who have not. Our psychiatrists offer psychiatric evaluations, medication evaluations, and on-going medication management. Medication management can include treatment for depression, anxiety, difficulty sleeping and more. While psychiatrists are able to provide on-going medication management for students with a documented diagnosis of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, they do not evaluate students for Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (see ADHD policy below) but we can help with appropriate referral when this is a concern.

Most commonly, students first meet with a CTC therapist at triage or in on-going counseling before being referred for a medication evaluation. Beginning fall semester 2009, a first session psychiatric appointment will be scheduled for 60 minutes. On-going medication management appointments are typically scheduled as 20-minute sessions (see no-show policy below).

No-Show Policy

Psychiatry appointments are limited; as such, a charge has been placed for missed appointments. Effective August 25, 2008, all patients failing to cancel a scheduled psychiatric appointment at least 24 hours in advance will be billed for that appointment. The charge is $40 for each 20 minute scheduled increment.

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Policy

Prescription medications for the treatment of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and related conditions will no longer be issued without the patient first completing a series of psychological tests and assessments. The testing will help establish if an ADHD or related disorder exists. Testing must be current, within three years prior to you seeking services with a SHS psychiatrist. If you have had testing completed within the previous three years, please bring a copy with you on your first visit. If you have not had testing completed, please speak with your CTC therapist or your psychiatrist about how to arrange for testing.
