On September 10th, recognized as World Suicide Prevention Day, Friends Helping Friends took the opportunity to educate others about suicide prevention. With pamphlets, magnets, posters, sample Friends Helping Friends course handbooks, and yellow ribbons in place, FHF staff spoke to bypassing students in the Elliott University Center Hallway, one of the most highly trafficked areas on the UNCG campus.
Started by the International Association for Suicide Prevention and the World Health Organization, World Suicide Prevention Day provides a chance to share information about suicide prevention, ongoing treatment for survivors, and about support for friends and family members affected by suicide. To spread awareness, individuals are encouraged to wear a yellow ribbon as a symbol of Suicide Prevention.
In this spirit, Friends Helping Friends not only wore yellow ribbons on themselves, but proudly distributed yellow ribbon pins to others, to send the message to those who might otherwise not know about World Suicide Prevention Day. Along with the yellow pins, information was shared; facts about suicide, resources for those in need, how to recognize signs of depression in peers, and ways to get involved with Suicide Prevention. This included information about Friends Helping Friends, including how to become a peer educator.
Because of the success of the booth this year, Friends Helping Friends plans to set up the booth again next September.
