Faculty and staff members who want to be a part of the Friends Helping Friends program have two ways to participate: through the UNCG Cares Program or through safeTalk.
Through UNCG Cares, the Dean of Students Office trains faculty and staff on how to recognize and assist students in crisis; currently, 500 faculty and staff have received UNCG Cares training.
To request a training please visit The Dean of Students Office and click on the UNCG Cares logo.
All RAs and Peer Academic Leaders have been trained in safeTALK. SafeTALK is a two-and-a-half to three-hour training that prepares anyone over the age of 15 to identify persons with thoughts of suicide and connect them to suicide first aid resources. Most people with thoughts of suicide invite help to stay safe. Alert helpers know how to use these opportunities to support that desire for safety. As a safeTALK-trained suicide alert helper, RAs and PALs will be better able to:
In addition, 47 faculty and staff members from around campus have completed either the safeTALK or ASIST workshop, both developed by Livingworks Education.
To request a safeTALK training for your office, please contact Jeanne Irwin-Olson at jrirwino@uncg.edu. We will accommodate as many programs as funding allows.
