Common Mental Disorders

What Are the Most Common Mental Disorders Among Adults in the U.S.?

Below you will find descriptions of the most common mental disorders among adults in the U.S. While reviewing this list please keep in mind that for an individual to receive a formal diagnosis of a mental disorder he/she would need to participate in a clinical interview with a mental health therapist (masters degree or PhD) that included the DSM-IV-TR (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders). As such, self-identifying with a mental disorder or suggesting a peer or family member has a mental disorder based on reading the material below is strongly discouraged.
