Eating Disorders

Eating disorders are the third most common mental disorder in the U.S.

Eating Disorders

Eating Disorders are subdivided into three categories:

  • Anorexia Nervosa
  • Binge Eating Disorder
  • Bulimia

While the three eating disorder subtypes are different, each condition shares a common symptom of hypersensitivity and/or judgment of one’s weight, consumption of food, or body image. Anorexia Nervosa includes extreme weight loss and persistent beliefs that one is overweight, or “fat”. Binge Eating Disorder refers to frequent episodes of binge eating, which includes eating a large amount of food in a short period of time and feeling a sense of feeling out of control while consuming such food.

Bulimia Nervosa includes frequent binge eating as well as attempting to curb weight gain by engaging in one or more compensatory behaviors (purging, laxative abuse, or excessive exercise). Keep in mind that anorexia nervosa is a serious condition when untreated insofar as many individuals die as a result of restrictive eating.
