Low Mental Health Literacy

Students have low mental health literacy.

College student mental health is further challenged by studies revealing students have limited knowledge of the availability of mental health counseling and how it might support their goals and ways to manage certain stressors.

Examples

  • College students report having limited knowledge of the availability of mental health counseling and often do not see its relevance to supporting their goals for life (Atkins, Morten, & Sue, 1998).
  • Other studies reveal students did not see their problem as serious enough for professional counseling (Sharkin et al., 2003).
  • In a study published by the American Psychiatric Association (2006) close to 50% of adult participants reported having a limited understanding of mental health illness.
  • Local clinical data from the UNCG Graduate Senior Survey (2006) revealed that 75% of UNCG seniors reported not being aware of or never utilizing The Counseling & Testing Center.
