Frequently Asked Immunization Questions


1. Why Are Immunizations Required?

North Carolina state law (General Statue 130A-155.1) "Requires anyone entering college or University present a certificate of immunization which documents compliance with all required immunization. International students are required by the University to have a Tuberculin test ( TB ) with a negative results within 12 months preceding the first day of classes( a chest x-ray is required if the TB test is positive ). 2. Does This Statute Apply to All College and Univeristy Students?

The statute applies to all students except the following:

Students residing off-campus and registering for any combination of:

    • Off-campus courses
    • Evening courses
    • Weekend courses
    • No more than four day credit hours in on-campus courses

If at anytime the above student status changes to: residing on campus AND on-campus day courses( before 5:00 PM), course load of (4) credit hours or more (between 8:00 and 5:00 PM) a Certificate of Immunization or record of immunization must be presented on or before the date the person first registers for a quarter or semester.

3. What Immunizations are Required by North Carolina Law?

Footnote 1 - DTP (Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis), DTaP (Diphtheria, Tetanus, acellular Pertussis), Td (Tetanus, Diphtheria), Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis): 3 doses of tetanus/diphtheria toxoid of which one must have been within the past 10 years. Those individuals enrolling in college or university for the first time on or after July 1, 2008 must have had three doses of tetanus/diphtheria toxoid and a booster dose of tetanus/diphtheria/pertussis vaccine if a tetanus/diphtheria toxoid or tetanus/diphtheria/pertussis vaccine has not been administered within the past 10 years.
Footnote 2 - An individual attending school that has attained his or her 18th birthday is not required to receive polio vaccine.
Footnote 3- Measles vaccines are not required if any of the following occur: Diagnoses of disease prior to January 1, 1994; an individual who has been documented by serological testing to have a protective antibody titer against measles; or an individual born prior to 1957. An individual who enrolled in college or university for the first time before July 1, 1994 is not required to have a second dose of measles vaccine.
Footnote 4- Mumps vaccine is not required if any of the following occur: An individual who has been documented by serological testing to have a protective antibody titer against mumps; an individual born prior to 1957; or Enrolled in college or university for the first time before July 1, 1994. An individual entering college or university prior to July 1, 2008 is not required to receive a second dose of mumps vaccine.
Footnote 5- Rubella vaccine is not required if any of the following occur: 50 years of age or older; Enrolled in college or university before February 1, 1989 and after their 30th birthday; an individual who has been documented by serological testing to have a protective antibody titer against rubella.
Footnote 6- Hepatitis B vaccine is not required if any of the following occur: Born before July 1, 1994.

4. Where Do I Send My Immunization Records?

5. When Are the Immunization Records Due?

Records should be in at least 2 weeks before attending SOAR, or submit immunization documents while attending SOAR. Financial Aid awards will be withheld until you are compliant with immunization requirements. North Carolina state law requires you to be dropped from registration 30 days from the first day of class, if you are not compliant with the immunization requirements.

6. Where Do I Find My Immunization Records?

Official immunization information may be obtained from any of the following documents:

    • High School Records
    • Personal immunization records (document need to be verified by a physician’s signature or stamp or clinic stamp
    • Military Records or WHO (World Health Organization Documents)
    • Previous college or university: Your immunization records do not transfer automatically.

7. What If I Do Not Have Documentation of Any Vaccines?

If you are unable to locate your immunization documents, the immunization must be repeated. Immunizations can be obtained at your local health department, personal medical provider office, an urgent care facility, or the Student Health Services.

8. What Is the Cost of Immunization at Student Health Services?

The TD, Tdap and MMR are all $17.25 each unless 2 are given at the same time, then the second vaccine is $9.41. These are the only vaccines required. Additional recommended vaccines Hepatitis B, HPV (gardasil) and meningococcal are also available. Prices may vary; please contact the immunization office for current prices 336.334.4086.

8. Are International Students Required to Have Documentation of Immunizations?

A certificate on immunization is required for international students. Additionally, international students are required by the University to have a Tuberculin Test (TB) with a negative result within the 12 months proceeding the first day of classes (chest x-ray required if test is positive). This test must be administered in the United States or Canada with a negative result with the 12 months preceding the first day of classes

NOTE:

    1. Enter the student’s name and UNCG ID Number on each form
    2. Date vaccine was administered (include month, day, and year)
    3. Mail all forms together
    4. Keep a copy on your immunization for your records
    5. Contact the immunization office during SOAR to determine if your immunization documents were received and approved.
    6. It takes approximately 1 week to evaluate and process immunization documents.
