What Can Parents Do?

Parents are an important part of the suicide prevention safety net for college students. Studies have found that today’s students are likely to turn to friends and family to talk about their problems. In one study (Oliver, Reed, Katz, & Haugh, 1999) 90% of students reported talking about problems to friends and 80% to family members. Therefore, it is important to keep the lines of communication open and to know the warning signs and the sources of help available to your student.

Know the Warning Signs

You know your student better than anyone else. So even after he or she is at college, you should be alert to signs of change, upset, and distress.
