Instructions for Research Logs

1. Spend about 3 hours per week in addition to your participation on TopClass and the required assignments listed on the syllabus listening to Grateful Dead or related music, browsing related web sites, reading the materials available in the library, interviewing Deadheads, or whatever else seems relevant.

2. Keep a log of these activities. Indicate the date of the activity, the type of activity (listening, browsing, reading, interviewing, or other), a one-sentence description of your reaction to the activity or what you learned from it, and how long you spent doing it (total number of minutes).

3. At the same time, keep a record of how long you spend on TopClass and doing the other required activities for class (i.e., those listed on the syllabus). (You will receive a separate grade for your TopClass participation, and I am assuming everyone will do all of the activities listed as required on the syllabus).

4. The log should have the following columns, in this order: Date of Activity, Required/Additional Activity, Type of Activity (listening, browsing, reading, interviewing, TopClass, or other), Description, Length of Time Spent.

5. Your research log grade will depend on the amount of time you spend and the variety of activities in which you engage (note that you should make sure you spend some of your time reading).

6. I will take the amount of time you spend on TopClass into account when I grade you on your TopClass participation at the end of the semester. I will also consider the quality and quantity of your postings for this grade.

7. Your record of activities required for class will help me understand how well prepared shy students were for class discussions. I will take this into account when I grade you on Class Participation at the end of the semester.
