Welcome to the Sociology Department at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro

some_peopleThe Department of Sociology at UNCG was established in 1913 and has since developed a tradition of providing students with strong foundations in research skills, writing, and research methods. Known as a department focused on teaching and student-faculty interaction, our faculty work with students in a variety of settings – the classroom, internships, student organizations, and as research assistants – to achieve our goals for learning. We believe that sociological knowledge is valuable in helping students better understand the global society in which they learn and work. Students graduating with a degree in Sociology can go on to graduate work in the field and are prepared for work in a variety of professions. (Go to our 'Employment Opportunities' page to learn more)

The Sociology major provides students with an understanding of the fundamental processes of social interaction that underlie all social organization and change. The “sociological imagination” helps students to understand how social structures and processes shape social life and how sociological analysis and empirical research are used as tools of understanding.

The Department offers the BA and MA degrees in Sociology. Within the BA program, we offer two concentrations – a concentration in Criminology and another in Social Problems in a Global Society. Within the MA degree, students also can choose a concentration in Criminology.Students majoring in Sociology also have the opportunity to complete the social studies licensure for secondary teachers.
