Authors may choose to submit an e-copy rather than enclose a diskette. E-copies should be sent to Sociological_Inquiry@uncg.edu. This will expedite the review process.
The entire manuscript, including all text, references, endnotes, and tables must be double-spaced using 12 point or larger non-proportional type, with at least 1.25 inch margins. Type should not be justified. Italics should be designated with underline only, and boldface should be reserved for mathematical symbols requiring that emphasis. Reference Format: Sociological Inquiry follows the format adopted for use in ASA journals.
In the text: Source references should be identified by the author's last name, year of publication, and pagination where necessary.
In the bibliography: All work cited in the text should be in the bibliography, beginning on a separate sheet (headed "REFERENCES"). References must be complete, correct, and double-spaced. If there are two or more items by the same author, list them in order of year of publication, beginning with the most recent.
Endnotes: Notes should appear at the end of the manuscript, beginning on a separate sheet (headed "ENDNOTES"). Type the notes in numerical order, double-spaced, following the REFERENCES section. Notes are numbered consecutively in the text by superscript numerals.
Authors are reminded that ALL previously published or presented work MUST be cited.
Tables and Figures: All tables and figures should be numbered consecutively (e.g., Table 1, Figure 1) and include a descriptive title (for tables) or caption (for figures). Insert a note in parentheses in the text indicating placement (e.g., "Table 1 about here").

A Brief History of Sociological Inquiry
Sociological Inquiry is the official journal of Alpha Kappa Delta, the Sociology Honor Society. In the fall of 1920, Dr. Emory S. Bogardus, chair of the sociology department at the University of Southern California, proposed the creation of a society in which students might become acquainted with each other's research projects and where they might meet informally with the entire faculty of the department to discuss sociological issues and research. On November 21, 1920, a group of 14 persons composed of the faculty and graduate students at USC organized the first chapter of Alpha Kappa Delta, with the purpose of interchange of ideas concerning sociological projects.
In 1921, Dr. Bogardus, acting on the belief that the best students in sociology in other institutions might be interested in a similar organization, sent letters to faculty members in a selected group of institutions. The University of Wisconsin was the first to respond. Northwestern University and the University of Kansas followed.
In 1942, at Chicago, in connection with the annual meeting of the American Sociological Association, Dr. Bogardus called together the faculty representatives of the first four chapters to be established, namely, Southern California, Wisconsin, Northwestern and Kansas. From this meeting, the United Chapters of Alpha Kappa Delta was organized. The national body spent its first years in helping build up the individual chapters and in formulating a national policy involving the creation of new chapters and the promotion of a national publication. From the beginning, the aim of Alpha Kappa Delta was to stimulate scholarship, not only among its members but among all students in sociology.
In 1928, The Quarterly was founded with Dr. Bogardus as the first editor. Dr. Bogardus continued as editor until 1932, when Dr. T. Earl Sullenger took over editorial responsibility. The official publication name was changed from The Quarterly to Newsletter in 1931, and remained that until the December issue of 1936 (volume 6, number 2). After that issue, the original title, The Quarterly, was resumed.
In the AKD elections of 1940, Dr. James A. Quinn was selected as editor of The Quarterly. In December of 1942, along with secretary-treasurer Dr. A.B. Hollingshead, Dr. Quinn resigned from his position to enter military service. During this time, Dr. Sullenger was asked to take over the editorship again.
In December of 1946, Dr. Robert R. Martin of Hamline became the new editor of The Quarterly. By 1954, 24 volumes of the AKD Quarterly had been published, and it had grown from a 4-page folder to an attractive publication of 32 pages. A new title,
Alpha Kappa Deltan, was chosen, and it was published biannually instead of quarterly. In 1955, a subtitle, "A Sociological Journal", was added to the
Deltan. At the 1956 annual meeting, Dr. Robert R. Martin was presented an appropriate gift for his service as editor since 1946. After serving another year, Dr. Martin resigned and was succeeded by Dr. Alvin H. Schaff. In 1957, five associate editors were added to the
Deltan staff.
In 1960, Dr. Otto N. Larsen was elected as editor. At this time, the name of the
Deltan was changed to
Sociological Inquiry: A Sociological Journal. Since this time, a number of professors have held the office of editor of the journal (which continues under the same name.) The tenure of the editors of
Sociological Inquiry is as follows:
