Undergraduate Advising in Sociology
The Department works to provide students with consistent and high quality advising with regard to their coursework and post-graduation goals through personal contact with an advisor. Advisors work directly with each student to develop a course plan that capitalizes on his or her interests while helping students make continual progress towards graduation.
Around the mid-point of each semester, students whose primary major is Sociology are contacted by email about setting up an advising appointment with an advisor. Announcements about advising appointments also are made in all Sociology classes during this time. Students sign up for an advising appointment in the main Sociology Department office in 337 Graham Bldg. Students should come prepared to their appointment with the advisor at the designated time by bringing a current degree evaluation or audit sheet and a list of classes they are interested in taking the following semester. During the meeting, the advisor and student will work together to develop a registration plan, and the advisor will provide the student with the advising code required for registration. A meeting with the advisor is required to obtain the advising code.
Students who have Sociology as a second major are not assigned to Sociology for advising but instead to the advisor in their primary major department. We recommend that these students also make an appointment to meet with a Sociology advisor to ensure they are making informed choices as to how best to meet their second major requirements.
