Goals of Project ExSEL

  • Increase the number of UNCG students who become high school science teachers
  • Recruit, prepare, and support outstanding high school science teachers in high-needs schools
  • Build a cohort of students striving toward becoming outstanding high school teachers

Stages of participation in Project ExSEL (visit the stages of participation page for more information)

  • Pre-scholars are recruited during their freshman and sophomore years at UNCG and express interest in Project ExSEL internships and scholarships. These students will be supported by summer internship stipends.
  • Project ExSEL scholars are recruited during their junior and senior years at UNCG and are awarded a $10,000 scholarship for each of their junior and senior years as they complete their science major and licensure programs. Science masters students and post-baccalaureate students can apply to become Project ExSEL scholars as well. In return, the scholar commits to teaching in the public school system, in a high-need school, for two years for each year they received the scholarship. To learn more about this service obligation, please click here.
  • Project ExSEL teachers are supported during their first two years of teaching through mentoring, induction activities, and other assistance.

Cohort participation (visit the cohort participation page for more information)

  • Project ExSEL scholars are involved in instructional experiences throughout their undergraduate degree program. As they progress, their instructional responsibility increases through both their discipline-based activities and their licensure program. By their senior year, these experiences merge in their student teaching semester.
  • Each Project ExSEL scholar will be expected to contribute to the group and take advantage of the professional growth opportunities that will help transform them into not only successful high school science teachers, but also into professionals who will be major contributors to and leaders in society as their careers advance.
  • Project ExSEL scholars will be our next teacher leaders!
