2004 School of Education Distinguished Alumni Awards

In a continuing effort to support and honor alumni, the School of Education held its third annual Distinguished Alumni Awards on May 14th, 2004. Dean Dale Schunk comments, "At this time of year when we honor our graduates it is fitting that we also celebrate the accomplishments of our talented alumni."

2004 Distinguished Alumni Award Recipients

  • Early Career Award (given for distinctive achievement in the profession less than five years since receiving their recent degree)
    • Christina O'Connor '02 MSA - Current principal at Kirkman Park Elementary. Her nominator says this about O'Connor, "Christina is passionately committed to her students and teachers. When students did well on their end-of-grade tests, she dyed her own hair purple!"
    • Anne Stubbins Powers '01 MS - Director of UNCG Office of Leadership and Service Learning. Her nominator wrote, "She offers 100 percent in everything she does and always searches for ways to go beyond the requirements of school, work or service to help others become the best that they can be."
  • Distinguished Career Award (given for exemplary service to one's profession)
    • Karen McNeil-Miller '81 MEd - VP for Corporate Resources at the Center for Creative Leadership. McNeil-Miller is currently on the Board of the Greensboro Day School, the Board of Guilford County Education Network, and the UNCG Board of Trustees. Her nominator writes, "Dr. McNeil-Miller has made a significant contribution to the field of education and the business world."
    • Charles "Chuck" Morris '92 EdD - Self-employed in advising and assisting school systems in improving instruction. Charles Morris has worked within the local school systems for practically his entire professional life. Since his retirement Morris is self-employed advising and assisting other school systems in improving instruction. "His main goal in life is to provide the best education possible for students," his nominator wrote.
    • Sheila Vannoy Groves '81 MEd - Member of UNCG School of Education Clinical Faculty Cadre. Her nominator comments, "Sheila is certainly an example of an alumnus who has continued to provide exemplary service to her profession at many levels."
  • Outstanding Achievement Award (given for an individual for achieving state, national, or international distinction)
    • Paula Myrick Short '67 BA - Myrick Short is the current Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs for the Tennessee Board of Regents; the sixth largest higher education system in the US. The school has 182,000 students! In 1993 she received the Jack A. Culbertson Award given nationally by the University Council for Educational Administration to the outstanding professor of educational administration. She has been president of the National Council of Professors of Educational Administration, the Southern Regional Council on Educational Administration.
