Alumni Awards

2006 School of Education Distinguished Alumni Awards

The School of Education honored a record 10 alumni with Distinguished Alumni Awards on April 21, 2006. 
Early Career Award is given to UNCG graduates no more than eight years since their most recent School of Education degree:
Terry S. Atkinson ,PhD ‘98:  Associate professor, College of Education, East Carolina University
Anna Mendez, BA ‘03:  First-grade teacher for Wake County Schools
Jennifer L. Maccarone, BS ‘04:  Teacher for Guilford Middle School, Guilford County Schools
Kay McMurphy, MEd ‘01:  Elementary special educator, Guilford Day School

The Distinguished Career Award is given for continued exemplary service in education.
Lane S. Anderson III, EdD ‘80:  Retired from Guilford County Schools as teacher, assistant
principal, and principal, now does consulting for N.C. Department of Instruction
Diane L. Frost, PhD ‘97:  Superintendent, Asheboro City Schools
Sam H. Houston, Jr., EdD ‘82:  President and CEO of N.C. Science, Mathematics, and Technology
Education Center
Carol G. Walters, MLIS ‘77:  Director of Sandhill Regional Library

The Outstanding Achievement Award is given for achieving state, national or international distinction in any field.
Julia Bowers Hanson, MLIS ‘00:  Educational specialist, Virtual Village, Public Library of
Charlotte and Mecklenburg County.  Hanson was one of only 27 librarians nationwide to be
chosen to receive the prestigious New York Times Librarian Award
Kenneth G. Ruff, EdD/EdS ‘02:  Director of Bands for N.C. A&T University and former assistant
principal of Eastern Guilford High School, Guilford County Schools.
