Distinguished Career Awards-Given for continued exemplary service in education
Dr. Martha Carroll ’62 ’62 BA,professor Emertia of Special Education from the University of Toledo. She chaired the department for the last seven years of her tenure. As a faculty member at the University of Toledo she earned the honors of Outstanding Teacher and Outstanding Advisor
Dot Kearns ’53 BA, ’74 MED, retired social worker and teacher; she has been a member of the Guilford County Board of Education for over 10 years. She is also a member of the UNCG Excellence Foundation Board of Visitors.
Carolyn McKinney ’69 BA, was an NC elementary classroom teacher for 25 years. She is the current Executive Director of the NC Professional Teaching Standards Commission.
Dr. Barbara Parramore ’54 BA, professor Emerita, North Carolina State University, College of Education and retired teacher, counselor and principal. She was the founding head of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction as well as serving as the second woman academic department head at NC State University.
Outstanding Achievement Award-Given for achieving state, national or international distinction in any field.
Dr. Jeri Board ’86 EdD has worked in education for more than 30 years as a teacher, consultant, director of research, director of foundation and government relations, director of marketing and university faculty member and Associate Vice-Chancellor for Continuing Education at UNC Wilmington. Her novel, The Bed She was Born In, took top honors at the North Carolina Society of Historians annual awards ceremony, winning the President’s Award.
Sally Hurd Smith ’97 MEd is a sixth grade middle school teacher at Kernodle Middle School in Guilford County, where she has been since 2000. In 2007, she received the prestigious Marcellus E. Waddill Excellence in Teaching Award by Wake Forest University President, Nathan O. Hatch. The award is given annually to one elementary/middle school teacher and one high school teacher in NC.
Distinguished Service Award is given for continued service to the UNCG School of Education.
Celia Jolley ’71 BA is a retired teacher and principal, was recognized for her service to the School of Education Advisory Board, serving as co-chair of the Students First Campaign Committee, and the UNCG Board of Visitors. She and her husband David also established the Celia Jolley School of Education Scholarship fund to support future teachers.
Marge Michel ’75 MEd is a retired teacher and founder of the publishing company, The Education Center. She is recognized for her service to the School of Education Advisory Board, and serving as co-chair of the Students First Campaign Committee. Her family’s foundation, The Michel Family Foundation, established the UNCG School of Education’s Teaching Resources Center, which supplies resources to future and current teachers.
