Office of Disability Services

The Office of Disability Services provides a full range of academic accommodations to physically challenged and learning disabled students.  The following is a brief list of services provided:

Alternative Testing:  Some students will need to take their tests in a nontraditional format.  Modifications may include extended time, private room, reader, scribe, or use of word processor for essay examinations.

Attendants:  For students who may need an attendant, assistance will be provided in identifying people who wish to provide such service.

Computer Services/Assistive Technology:  Adaptive equipment such as a Kurzwell Reader, an Arkenstone Scanner, CTVs, and Assistive Listening Devices are available to registered students.  Software such as Zoomtext and Jaws are available in computer labs on campus.

Counseling:  Disability Services is aware that students with disabilities may have unique educational and/or disability-related problems.  Trained staff members are available for disability management counseling.

Interpreter Services:  Disability Services staff will assist in the location of interpreters for hearing-impaired students.  The Office is equipped with a TTY.

Notetakers:  Voluntary notetakers are solicited and photocopying may be done through our office.  A file is maintained on students interested in being notetakers.

Priority Registration:  You and your faculty advisor will discuss the courses you need to take.  However, our office can "stamp" your registration card to verify that you are registered with our office and warrant priority registration.

Reader Services:  Assistance in acquiring taped textbooks through Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic is provided.  A file of available readers is kept for instances when materials are not available through RFB&D.

Tutoring:  Students are provided with information regarding campus tutorials and labs.  Individual tutors are provided when warrented by the disability.  Office staff also work with students on study skills and time management techniques.

Disability Mangement Counseling:  Counseling sessions with our trained staff members are available and encouraged.  Appointments may be scheduled to address your unique educational and/or disability-related needs.  Please make an appointment at the Disability Services Office in person or by phone.

Communicating with Faculty and Staff:  Schedule an early appointment with your approval letter.  These forms are to be hand-carried to your faculty members at the beginning of each semester.  There is a faculty sign-off sheet which you are encouraged to return to Disability Services to verify that you have spoken with you faculty members.

Advocacy Assitance:  Disability Services staff members are able to serve as advocates in instances where a student and college officials disagree regarding the appropriateness of services and/or accomodations. A formal grievance procedure can serve to resolve disability-related complaints.  Please see you counselor or the Disabilitly Services director if additional information is needed.
