Videos in Blackboard
A collaboration between the University Libraries and the Teaching and Learning Center allows you to request feature film titles and then embed them into Blackboard. Any major motion picture (documentary or narrative) that wasn’t produced by 21st Century Fox is available. The way it works is you request a title at this web site, and you will be given a username and password to access the site and receive the link that you can paste into your Blackboard site. Any movie you request will be available throughout that semester. In addition to this new service, here is a link to other video libraries available for use in Blackboard at the university. If you have questions or would like to see a demonstration please contact Nik Hunnicutt at nshunnic@uncg.edu.
Adobe Acrobat
Some faculty and staff have inquired about access to the full version of Adobe Acrobat. This is helpful for converting PDF documents back to word or vice-versa, creating forms, and merging PDF documents among other things. The good news is that UNCG has a campus-wide license for this software. To request that this software be installed on your computer please put in a ticket for Mike and Scott at the School of Education Help Desk.
Prezi for iPad
Prezi is an alternative to PowerPoint and is both a free and neat way to present information to a large group. They have recently released a version of the iPad that is available from the App Store for free.
Google Docs Tip: Sharing Large Files
If you want to share a video or other large file that is up to a 1024 MB (~1GB) in size, you are in luck. An added benefit of our recent conversion to Gmail is our ability to share large documents. Nik has created a tutorial using Jing that outlines this process.
Incorporate Class Website into Blackboard
Developing a separate Website to compliment a class's Blackboard site is an excellent way to use the Web as an instructional tool. Having a class Website gives students the ability to navigate as they normally would on the Web. This allows for a much more intutive and easy search for information. To see an example, visit Dr. Beverly Faircloth's TED 669 class Website.
For more information contact Dan Kuoni at d_kuoni@uncg.edu.
Faculty Websites
Many faculty are not aware that the information on the personal Website space that UNCG provides everyone is not searchable. If you want information on the Web that is available to search engines, develop a faculty Web page that is on your departmental Website.
To get an idea of what can be done with a faculty Web page take a look at Dr. Ann Davis's ELC faculty page
