Our Mission Statement
The mission of the School of Education (SOE) is to improve education, early childhood through older adulthood, in all educational settings. This mission is to be accomplished through the education of professional personnel, including teachers, counselors, librarians, administrators, and allied professionals; through research, demonstration, and other creative activities intended to increase our knowledge about the most effective educational practices; and through competent and ethical professional services based on the best educational practices. Believing that our mission can be achieved through productive interaction among teaching, service, and research, the School seeks:
- To promote scholarly inquiry in all the ways it can occur in order to develop knowledge fundamental to educational theory and policies and to improve educational practices;
- To provide exemplary pre-service teacher education programs that can serve as teaching/learning models for the state and nation;
- To provide the state, region, and nation graduate programs of distinction for professional personnel in public and private schools, libraries, hospitals, mental health agencies, institutions of higher education, business and industry, and other groups;
- To provide professional service and leadership to local, state, national, and international education agencies and institutions, and to the public.

SOE History
Opening on October 5, 1892, with ten acre, two main buildings and less than 200 students, The University of North Carolina at Greensboro has grown into a 210-acre campus with more than 17,000 students.
As a girls' normal (teacher preparatory school), the institution granted its graduates a "diploma and life license " to teach in North Carolina. Degrees were first awarded in 1903.
Today the UNCG School of Education carries on that legacy, by striving to be one of the best institutions of Education in the nation. It is known throughout North Carolina, the Southeast, and the nation for the quality of its students, programs, faculty, and partnerships with the public and private sectors.
One of six professional schools at the University, The School of Education's programs are approved by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), the Council of Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), and the American Library Association (ALA).
