The NC TEACH Post-Baccalaureate Certificate Program begins with an orientation in May, followed by an intensive Summer Institute. The program is offered in a blended format of online and face-to-face class sessions. Participants who successfully complete the Summer Institute (three courses) earn nine semester hours. During the summer, candidates who do not already hold a lateral entry teaching contract apply for teaching positions in their fields. In some cases, candidates student teach in place of working as a lateral entry teacher. Candidates may visit www.teach4NC.org for information about teaching positions.
During the fall and spring semesters, participants earn an additional nine semester hours via the following coursework: (1) monthly seminars (6 hrs.) that focus on knowledge and skill development, mentoring, and online support; and (2) a course in teaching methodology (3 hrs.; K-12 French and Spanish candidates complete two methods courses for a total of 6 hrs.). Additional coursework in the teaching area may be required for individuals after their transcripts are reviewed. The University’s NC TEACH Licensure Advisor will prepare a program of study tailored to the requirements of the candidate’s teaching area and background. We do allow rolling admissions.
Throughout the program, candidates are members of an NC TEACH cohort (group) designed to provide cooperative learning experiences and mutual support. UNCG faculty and master teachers from regional school districts serve as instructors and mentors.
Candidates apply for North Carolina Standard Professional I teaching licensure after
• completing their program of study, which includes a teaching portfolio,
• receiving passing scores on the PRAXIS II teaching examination in the teaching field, and
• successfully completing at least one year of lateral entry teaching or one semester of student teaching in the licensure field
The UNCG Host Site will prepare a program of study tailored to the requirements of the candidate’s teaching area and background. We do allow rolling admissions.
