Christine Murray (CED) was featured in the Campus Weekly Spotlight announcing her new role as director of the Program to Advance Community Responses to Violence Against Women. Coverage on the project is also featured here.
Babbette Mabe (Dean's Office) was featured in Campus Weekly as a recipient of the UNCG Staff Star, presented by Chancellor Brady.
Jenni Clayton (ELC student) is the Regional Teacher of the Year for the Charter Schools region by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction and ING. Jenni will now compete for the title of NC Teacher of the Year. She will be honored at the NC Teacher of the Year ceremony in May 2012.
UNCG Department of Counseling and Educational Development will be hosting a retirement party for Venus Pinnix Tuesday, January 31st, from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. in the Virginia Dare Room in the Alumni House. Please e-mail your RSVP to h_ratti@uncg.edu by January 17th.

The Teaching Fellows will be sponsoring a movie night to watch and discuss the film American Teacher and would like to invite all interested students in the School of Education to attend. John E. Straub, Professor and Chair of the Department of Chemistry at Boston University
Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar for 2011-12 will present a public lecture: “A Lively Tour of the Periodic Table” on Thursday, February 16, 7:30 PM, Room 201 Sullivan Science Building. This lecture explores the diverse properties of the chemical elements through the use of historical accounts and demonstrations of chemical reactions.
Sam Wineburg, professor of education at Stanford University (brother of Bob Wineburg, Social Work) will present a talk on Howard Zinn, sponsored by the Public History program at UNCG. It is titled: A History With No Hands: Howard Zinn’s A People’s History of the United States and the Development of Popular Historical Consciousness Stanford University on Feb. 17 at 2pm, School of Education Building, Room 120
Internationally recognized urban sociologist Dr. Pedro Noguera will be speaking at UNC-Chapel Hill on February 28. See more information here.
The Old Town Run is on March 17th. It's a 5-mile run around campus that raises money for Special Olympics. You can run or walk, and kids are welcome as well. There is interest in forming a School of Education team. If you are interested in participating please email Amy Vetter at amvetter@uncg.edu. See here for more information.
Nominations are now being accepted for the 2012 Mentoring/Advising/Supervising (MAS) Award is Two MAS Awards are given, one designated for tenured faculty and the other for untenured faculty. The award is pertinent to both undergraduate and graduate levels of education. The nomination materials are available here.
The School of Education scholarship application is now available online. Please encourage your students to apply. The deadline is March 30.
The Triad Teacher Research Conference will be April 25, 2012 (6 to 9 PM) in the School of Education. Proposals for the conference are due on February 15 and can be found at http://www.triadteacherresearchers.com. Please encourage your students in all areas and levels of education to submit a proposal and/or plan to attend on the 25th.
The Professions in Deafness program will host its annual ASL Idol competition on April 1st.
