Faculty, Staff, Student, and Alumni Accomplishments

David AyersDavid Ayers (TEHE) presented "An Analysis of Philosophical Assumptions in Research on Higher Education Organization and Governance: The Case for Critical Realism" at the Association for the Study of Higher Education conference.

Wayne JournellWayne Journell (TEHE) will receive the Kipchoge Neftali Kirkland Social Justice Award from the College and University Faculty Assembly (CUFA), the research body of National Council for the Social Studies for his paper (with co-author Erin Castro), "Culturally Relevant Political Education: Using Immigration as a Catalyst for Civic Understanding."

Three SES faculty and six doctoral students (Tammy Barron, Carol Bland, Megan Kemmery, Stephanie Gardner-Walsh, Kristin Sinclair, Natsuko Takemae) attended the Teacher Education Division of the Council for Exceptional Children Conference in Austin, Texas in November 2011. The SES group participated in seven presentations. Marcia Rock and Bonnie Billingsley serve on the TED board and Bill Bursuck represented SES at the Higher Education Consortium for Special Education Meeting.

Elaine Purpel, David Purpel's life partner and ELC's friend, passed away Saturday morning. A memorial service is scheduled for November 29 at 2:00 at the New Garden Friends Meeting House. The family requests that donations in her honor be made to NAMI-NC, an organization that she worked with and supported. NAMI-NC is North Carolina's arm of the National Alliance on Mental Illness.

The SOE Reading Day Luncheon will be Tues. December 6 from 12 to 2 p.m. both in front of and within the Self Auditorium (118 SOE).

ELC is collecting supplies for Guilford County Teacher Supply Warehouse, as well as stockings for the Salvation Army through December 12. Collection boxes can be found in 341 SOEB. See supply list here.

Dean Wixson will be hosting a winter social on January 14th, 2012. Event details will be announced soon.

Venus Pinnix will be honored for her 34 years of service to UNCG on Tuesday, January 31 from 3:30-5p.m. in Virginia Dare Room, Alumni House. See flyer here for details.
